Little sister to Joali Maldives, just a boat journey away, Joali Being is dedicated purely to self-discovery and renewal, translated through wellbeing programmes that span five to ten nights. The biophilic design principles feed into the  68 private beach and water villas, yoga shalas, glass-floored treatment rooms and hydrotherapy halls. In a world where sound therapy in the indigenous forest, deck-side sun salutations and “Earth to Table” cuisine are part in parcel of the flow of the island, finding “weightlessness”, the whole ethos behind the concept, comes naturally. Residences from world-class practitioners bring wellness workshops to life, filling the ‘Calendar of Joy’ throughout the year.

Hannah Boucher

Perowne International

What’s one destination/hotel you would go back to in a heartbeat if you could?
Borgo Santandrea on the Amalfi Coast – it’s built into the cliffs with rooms spread over multiple terraces and is the only hotel in Amalfi with its own private beach and beach club, which you can directly access through one lift – the most phenomenal place for an early morning swim as you look back up at the epic architecture. I dream about the ‘Amalfi Spritz’ made with their homemade limoncello and lemon jam – I never thought I could be swayed away from Aperol but it’s the most delicious drink. The food speaks for itself…Alici was recently awarded a Michelin Star while the hotel was awarded two keys in the Michelin List. There’s also a brand-new spa this season located in a turret with sensational views of the sea. Belissima!

Is there a new opening you’re dying to visit?
Casa Monti, Rome, opening 1 June – dubbed ‘the home of the artist’, Monti is a really cool area I visited for my birthday recently, it’s near the Coliseum filled with chic wine bars, and this hotel is the sister to La Fantaisie, Paris which opened last summer, part of the family-owned Leitmotiv group – it’s going to have a terrace restaurant, Susanne Kaufmann spa and rooftop bar with amazing views of the eternal city, filled with lots of colour – I can’t wait to visit!

What hotel gets a lot of hype (and is totally worth it!)?
Grand Hotel Son Net, Mallorca – it only opened last year and we’ve had incredible press pick-up, it’s been included in lots of awards and was recently voted best overall hotel in Mallorca on Forbes. It’s from the team behind Finca Cortesin, Andalusia and is one of the most beautiful hotels I’ve ever seen – every single corner has been intricately designed by Lorenzo Castillo, with artwork and fabrics sourced from all over the world, and it’s only 20 minutes away from Palma. A stunning 17th century Spanish countryside palacio, which has just launched a brand-new spa!

For a spa-cation like no other, where would you book?
Bawah Reserve, daily spa treatments are included in the rates which is quite a rare offering for all-inclusives! You can even take a private boat out to a hidden beach clifftop for a “spa explorer” experience, where you’ll receive an epic, authentically Indonesian treatment while overlooking the gorgeous Bawah waters and breaking waves in the background.

The Lanesborough Club & Spa, London, it has an abundance of treatments, aesthetics, and fitness classes, a hydrotherapy pool with loungers and a call-button for your personal spa butler so you can order a glass of champagne or green juice – it’s extremely elegant and the best spot to browse through glossy magazines

Do you have anything on your travel bucket list that is still waiting to be fulfilled?
Time + Tide in Zambia has an outdoor sleep-out experience, where you literally sleep under the stars – a complete immersion in the depths of the Zambian bush, surrounded by the incredible African animals and wildlife! Being South African I’ve been fortunate enough to see some of the beauty of Africa, however, there’s so much more I want to see, one for the bucket list for sure!

What are some non-negotiables for you when picking a place to stay?SUN – it has to be somewhere warm and ideally near a beach, however I went back to Lisbon for the second time last year and fell in love with the city. It’s the perfect mix between city and beach, with the best vibe – I love a rooftop bar too of which it has lots! We can work from abroad in August and I think I know where I’m returning too…

Any summer vacay plans in the pipeline?
I’m doing a French road trip to the wine region, stopping off at the beautiful Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa, which I’m really excited about – they have complimentary bicycles you can use to get around the rolling hills with an infinity pool looking over the sweeping valley – and of course lots of Champagne including a very chic Champagne trolley that can be wheeled to your room for the perfect choice! I’m also going to Milos which I’m super excited about – I love how Greece feels like you’re stepping back in time, it has a slower pace to life and an authentic, rustic feel which is rare to find these days!

A wellness enthusiast asks you to plan a holiday for them… where do you send them?
Villa Stéphanie – Health & Wellbeing at Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa – it’s the first Oetker Collection hotel and is where in-the-know celebs go for a full body detox & health reset. You can get a mega full-body health scan with Dr König, including cancer, genetic, hormone screening, as well as a full gut health check, which is very on trend right now. The hotel is located quite literally in a park – Lichtentaler Allee – totally immersed in nature and the pool looks out over the trees – the ultimate restorative retreat! Brenners is also currently undergoing a massive renovation so stay tuned for Q4… OR head to the Italian Dolomites, Gardena Grödnerhof Hotel & Spa in Val Gardena – a UNESCO world heritage site with phenomenal scenery including the stunning Alpe de Suisse – you feel an instant sense of calm as soon as you step foot in the mountain range, a heavenly hiking trip, and the spa offers incredible treatments alongside delicious cuisine.

What’s one destination/hotel you would go back to in a heartbeat if you could?
La Colombe D’Or – we have been going for eons and we always stay in the same room. The team are wonderful and it’s very understated. It really does feel like a home from home – if only my own home had as many incredible works of art within it!

Is there a new opening you’re dying to visit?
Peninsula Istanbul  – it has the most incredible views of the Bosphorus with a huge stretch of gardens full of beautiful citrus trees. I’ve been told it’s a truly special oasis and I can’t wait to see it myself.

What hotel gets a lot of hype (and is totally worth it!)?
Passalacqua on Lake Como – which won best hotel in the world last year in 50 Best. It has the same owner of Grand Hotel Tremezzo also on Lake Como – the wonderfully ebullient Valentina deSantis who has put her true heart and soul into every element of this property and it really shows. It is totally worth its hype

For a spa-cation like no other, where would you book?
Buchinger Wilhelmi on Lake Constance – I have tried all other medi spa’s and this is the best for me by far.

Do you have anything on your travel bucket list that is still waiting to be fulfilled?
Yes! I am dying to go to Costa Rica.

What are some non-negotiables for you when picking a place to stay?
The hotel has to have a sense of place as well as warm and welcoming staff who help me get under the skin of the destination I am going to and ensure I experience it like a local, not a tourist

Any summer vacay plans in the pipeline?
La Colombe D’or bien sur! Vila Vita Parc in Algarve and Maxx Royal – a new hotel by the Turkish-run company, opening in Bodrum later this month.

A wellness enthusiast asks you to plan a holiday for them… where do you send them?
It really depends on what they’re looking to get out of their holiday, but a few that instantly spring to mind – LeFay on Lake Garda, Palazzo Fiuggi outside Rome, Zulal by Chiva Som, only one hour from Doha in Qatar, and Castelfalfi in Tuscany which has just opened a spa in conjunction with Rakxa from Thailand.

What’s one destination/hotel you would go back to in a heartbeat if you could?
I was lucky enough to recently visit Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches Island and I’m already itching to go back. It’s a complete private island paradise unlike anywhere I’ve been before: think, cycling to breakfast alongside giant tortoises, swimming in crystal-clear azure waters with sea turtles and shoals of rainbow-coloured fish, and the most breathtaking sunsets. I’ve never experienced anywhere quite like it: it is the epitome of total barefoot bliss.

Is there a new opening you’re dying to visit?
There’s a new opening called Gundari on the tiny Greek island of Folegandros opening this month. It will be the island’s very first boutique, five star resort and will really put this raw, wild and stunningly beautiful island on the map for luxury travellers looking for a new destination this summer. The owner has taken a personal stake in conserving the island’s natural beauty and the resort will be an example of how hotels can be sustainable without compromising on service and experience. The spa will be inspired by Ancient Greek rituals and there will be yoga, pilates and sound healing – I think it will be Greece’s most exciting opening this summer.

What hotel gets a lot of hype (and is totally worth it!)?
For me, it has to be Beaverbrook in Surrey. The interiors are so beautiful (Susie Atkinson & Nicola Harding nailing it once again), the food is exceptional and the spa is sensational. You step into a sanctuary surrounded by floral-inspired stained-glass windows, and all treatments are rooted in nature and inspired by the beautiful British countryside – I also think the women’s health retreats are a must. Also, Cliveden House. The property is steeped in so much incredible history – if only walls could talk! The rooms are some of the most spectacular I’ve seen and the service is really second to none. Plus Chef Chris Hannon’s food is out of this world!

For a spa-cation like no other, where would you book?
If we’re talking within the UK, it would be the new spa at The Lakes by YOO in the Cotswolds. It opened last year in partnership with COSMOSS (the first spa in the world to partner with Kate Moss’ wellness brand!). The spa is all centred around longevity and inspired by the world’s Blue Zones (where people live the longest lives), with incredible science-first treatments and longevity-focused retreats with some of the best names in the industry. Deepak Chopra is even running a retreat there from 13 – 16 June this year!

Or, for a long haul option, it has to be Chablé Yucatan in Mexico. The spa at Chablé Yucatan is the first and only spa in the world to be built around a natural cenote on the property. Spa treatments and experiences are based on Mayan rituals and it is a very spiritual, special place. For a once in a lifetime experience, you have to try their traditional Temazcal ceremony hosted by one of the on site ‘abuelas’.

Do you have anything on your travel bucket list that is still waiting to be fulfilled?
A self-drive journey through Namibia, finishing off at Zannier Hotels’ Sonop – an otherworldly tented retreat in the heart of the Namibian desert.

What are some non-negotiables for you when picking a place to stay?
Beautiful interiors that have a true connection to the locale, and a strong commitment to sustainability and community engagement are non-negotiables for me.

Any summer vacay plans in the pipeline?
Later this summer I’m heading back out to Menorca – I visited a couple of years ago and completely fell in love with the wild and rugged scenery and laidback vibe of the island. I’ll be staying at Relais & Chateaux property Torre Vella Fontenille Menorca, a classic Menorcan finca that has been turned into a beautifully chic hotel and incredible agrotourism project.

A wellness enthusiast asks you to plan a holiday for them… where do you send them?
For those looking to embark on a full wellness retreat and journey of self-discovery, I’d send them to Joali Being. It’s the Maldives’ first wellbeing island of its kind, surrounded by the most beautiful crystalline waters and coconut palms. Every guest has a completely tailored wellbeing plan centred around four key pillars – Mind, Skin, Microbiome and Energy – and programmes deal with a whole host of different health goals, from stress recovery and digestive reset to healthy ageing and energy replenishment.

Amilla Maldives: The Ultimate Far-Flung Wellness Destination

Tucked away in the far-flung Baa Atoll, Amilla Maldives Resort stands as a beacon of tranquillity and rejuvenation. As a wellness journalist, my quest for holistic well-being led me to this tropical paradise, where sustainability and wellness are not mere buzzwords but integral parts of the resort’s ethos. Over the course of a few days, I immersed myself in the luxurious offerings of Amilla, delving into its eco-conscious practices and indulging in the rejuvenating treatments at the renowned Javvu Spa.

Sustainability at Amilla: A Commitment to the Earth

From the moment I set foot on the island, it was evident that Amilla is deeply committed to sustainability. The resort’s “Homegrown at Amilla” project is a testament to this dedication. This initiative focuses on cultivating fresh produce on the island itself, reducing the carbon footprint associated with importing food. Wandering through the lush gardens, I saw an array of vegetables and herbs flourishing under the tropical sun. This not only ensures that guests enjoy the freshest ingredients in their meals but also supports the local ecosystem and promotes biodiversity.

The “Un(Do) Reduce Waste Initiative” is another cornerstone of Amilla’s sustainability strategy. The resort has implemented comprehensive waste management practices, including extensive recycling programs, composting organic waste, and minimizing single-use plastics. I was particularly impressed by their innovative approach to reusing materials creatively, such as transforming glass bottles into beautiful works of art. These efforts have significantly reduced the resort’s environmental impact, making my stay not just luxurious, but also guilt-free.

Javvu Spa: A Sanctuary of Serenity

Central to my wellness journey at Amilla was the Javvu Spa, a sanctuary where time seemed to stand still. The spa’s philosophy is rooted in a holistic approach to well-being, blending traditional healing techniques with modern therapies. Nestled amidst verdant foliage, the spa’s serene ambience set the stage for profound relaxation and rejuvenation.

The treatment menu at Javvu Spa is extensive, offering a range of therapies designed to nurture the body, mind, and spirit. One of the highlights for me was the “Sun Rescue” treatment, which proved to be a soothing balm for my sun-kissed skin. This treatment began with a refreshing Aloe Vera Mist that instantly cooled and calmed my sunburn. The therapist then applied a cool body wrap made of coconut yoghurt and cucumber paste, ingredients renowned for their hydrating and anti-inflammatory properties. As the wrap worked its magic, I enjoyed a deeply relaxing scalp massage, which further enhanced the sensation of complete tranquillity. This treatment not only alleviated the discomfort of sun exposure but also left my skin feeling nourished and rejuvenated.

In addition to traditional spa treatments, Javvu Spa offers an array of wellness classes and workshops. Yoga sessions, held on the tranquil shores at sunrise and sunset, were a daily ritual that I eagerly anticipated. The classes catered to all levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners, and the instructors were adept at creating a supportive and nurturing environment. I also participated in a mindfulness meditation workshop, which provided valuable tools for cultivating a sense of inner peace and presence.

Mini Wellness Retreats: Tailored Paths to Rejuvenation

Amilla Maldives Resort offers mini wellness retreats designed to cater to individual wellness goals, whether you’re seeking a short escape or a more comprehensive rejuvenation experience. Available in 3, 5, or 7-day packages, these retreats are meticulously crafted to provide a holistic reset for both body and mind.

Each retreat begins with a personalized wellness consultation to assess the guest’s specific needs and tailor the program accordingly. The daily itinerary typically includes invigorating yoga and meditation sessions, held in serene locations such as the beach or the lush gardens, helping to cultivate a sense of inner peace and mindfulness.

Nutritionally balanced meals, featuring fresh produce from the resort’s “Homegrown at Amilla” project, are a cornerstone of the retreat experience. These meals are designed to nourish the body and support overall wellness, ensuring that guests feel revitalized from the inside out.

The retreats also feature a series of bespoke treatments at the Javvu Spa. Guests can indulge in therapies like the “Holistic Healing Journey,” which combines aromatherapy, reflexology, and Reiki to balance energy and promote deep relaxation. Another popular option is the “Detoxifying Seaweed Wrap,” which uses locally sourced seaweed to detoxify and rejuvenate the skin.

Beyond physical treatments, the retreats emphasize mental and emotional well-being through workshops on stress management, resilience building, and mindfulness practices. These sessions provide practical tools and techniques that guests can incorporate into their daily lives, fostering long-term wellness benefits.

Amilla’s mini wellness retreats offer a tailored path to rejuvenation, providing guests with a comprehensive and immersive experience that addresses all aspects of well-being. Whether you choose a 3, 5, or 7-day retreat, you are sure to leave the island feeling renewed, balanced, and revitalized.

Nature Conservation Efforts: Preserving Paradise

Amilla’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond its wellness offerings to include robust nature conservation efforts. Unlike many other resort islands in the Maldives, Amilla is a natural island rather than a man-made one, which enhances its unique ecological value. The resort actively works to preserve its pristine environment through various initiatives aimed at protecting the local flora and fauna. These include coral propagation projects to restore damaged reefs, turtle conservation programs, and regular beach clean-ups to maintain the island’s natural beauty.

A Haven of Rejuvenation and Sustainability

Amilla Maldives Resort is more than just a luxurious getaway; it is a sanctuary where wellness and sustainability converge. The resort’s commitment to environmental stewardship, as evidenced by the “Homegrown at Amilla” and “Un(Do) Reduce Waste Initiative,” ensures that guests can enjoy their stay with a clear conscience. The Javvu Spa, with its holistic treatments and comprehensive wellness programs, offers a haven of relaxation and rejuvenation.

My time at Amilla was transformative, offering not just a break from the everyday, but a profound journey into wellness and sustainability. As I departed the island, I felt a deep sense of renewal and gratitude, knowing that I had experienced a true haven of rejuvenation in the heart of the Maldives.

If You’re New To Wellness Travel…You Should Try A Self-Guided Retreat

Retreats are a rite of passage in a self-care era, where matcha lattes and reformer Pilates reign high. Escaping the mental clutter of your everyday life is, from experience, the most effective way to hit reset. Retreating comes in all shapes and sizes in 2024, from 10 days in silence in the remote mountains of Nepal to ½ a day in the heart of London, the diversity of retreating only gets greater as our passion for dedicating time to ourselves grows.

If you’re new to this ‘retreating’ lark or after a slightly more laid-back approach, a self-guided retreat may be your cup of tea. In the bucolic county of Somerset, 20 minutes outside of Frome, 42 Acres are championing self-guided retreats with their Wild Weekends. This spot is an idyllic nature haven spanning 173 acres of regenerative landscape and is home to an abundance of wildlife, including a family of bevers I became infatuated with!

Ambling up the olive tree lined-up track on my arrival to 42 Acres, a wet and windy front greeted me, but the typical British weather didn’t stop the beauty of this 13th-century Hermitage shining through. Trundling up the cobbled path with umteen bags brimming with clothes I didn’t wear (note to self: all you need is leggings and a cosy knit on retreat and Ugg’s serve no purpose in rural woodlands), it became clear that the sacredly historic building has undergone a fresh refurb with an extension to maximise space. Tastefully decked in oak wood and minimalist furnishings, I switched my trainers for slippers, following the no-shoe policy, which made me feel right at home from the moment I stepped foot into my retreat weekend.

What is it about being plucked away from the commotion of London, for me it’s a matter of minutes in a place like 42 Acres and I’m instantly more zen…there’s something in the countryside air! Not to sound too cliche but managed to adopt a new persona from offset, a less agitated, level-headed version of myself and one I much prefer. After a quick tour around the building I was settled into my new home for the weekend, delighted with my sumptuous room. The vaulted nook, accented with original oak beams and leaded stained glass windows, has been beautifully brought up to date with a jute woven wall hanging and a 6-foot bed scattered with teal and terracotta cushions.

Being a well-seasoned retreater, post-check-in would typically be the time an orientation would commence, but as this element was out of the equation, I had much of the afternoon to myself, utter bliss after a full-on week of work. The drizzly weather made it all the better to curl up by the fireplace in the living room flicking through the extensive collection of well-being books, sipping on the unlimited supply of Pukka Love tea with a freshly baked turmeric buckwheat cookie… oh how I love the art of self-care.

Think of the Wild Weekends as a build-your-own retreat package, centred around the land, food and wellbeing! Pick-n-mix the activities, workshops and classes that catch your interest. Whether you’re a worldly retreater, looking for a less regimented schedule, or you’re a newbie, the carefully curated programme 42 Acres has devised with two to three activities per day grants you autonomy, taking each day at your own pace.

Plant maven Russel, who heads up the ornamental gardening at 42 Acres, guided us through his ‘edimental’ garden grazing tour, tasting plants along the way which would later appear on my plate. His brief for the gardens ‘make it beautiful and edible’, has certainly been achieved. Wandering through the wilding secret garden to the pristine walled garden, sniffing and sampling as we trotted along, I began to feel more attuned to nature. The agri-wilding landscaping project at 42 Acres embodies their mission to harmonise guests with nature, a concept I fully grasped as I rambled along. In essence, this self-guided retreat is a journey to re-spark your connection with the great outdoors, and this majestic woodland is the breeding ground to adopt nature’s rhythm.

Like a group of eager primary school kids before the lunch bell rings, my fellow eight retreaters and I huddled around the open kitchen at 6pm for our evening meal. Head chef Jo, an advert for her culinary skills with a glowing complexion, introduced us to the nourishing “Soil-to-Gut” menu. The 80-20 philosophy uses 80% of food grown on-site or within 40 miles radius, and 20% of items such as tea and cupboard staples that they can’t source locally. Scoring points with Tim Spector, my plant diversity went through the roof throughout the weekend, ingesting an abundance of hyper-seasonal foraged plants, picked freshly the same day.

Each veg-dense meal was sublimely executed to send your taste buds skyrocketing. Roasted celeriac steaks dressed in tamari, maple and caper sauce, with steamy greens, birch polypore honey glazed carrots and creamed potatoes set the tone for the food, followed by a dairy-free take on delicate crème caramel. The spreads seemed to get more elaborate each day, climaxing with a beetroot lasagne that inspired me to get creative with my layers the next time I assemble one at home. Mealtimes gave you moments to mingle with the other retreaters, chatting away as we relished the delicious food, unanimously agreeing that we must eat more vegetables! The option to dine solo is there, with no pressure whatsoever.

I’m all ‘go, go, go’ in my day-to-day, cramming any free hours that crop up with Barry’s classes and catch-ups with friends. Don’t get me wrong, I love keeping busy but when I step back, the things I gravitate towards are all energy givers…not to mention my side hustle coaching F45 which requires every ounce of energy I have in the tank. Candlelit yoga, nature walks, morning flow and a woodland sauna session formed the outline for a calm weekend, with the choice to take part in all or cherry-pick the experiences that call you.

Scanning over the ‘experience’ timetable, my initial instinct was to squeeze in a few extra exercise blasts where I could. This way of thinking, that I always have to get as much exercise as possible is something I’m trying to unlearn. Sometimes a gentle yoga session is enough, and there is nothing to feel bad about if that’s your only exercise for the day. I did test out the 5km loop for a trail run, but apart from that I slipped into a calmer way of moving my body.

Restorative yoga was completely new to me. In the candlelit yoga yurt, an array of props, pillows and blankets were sprawled out over the decking with a roaring woodburner keeping it nice and toasty. I’d liken this soothing experience to guided napping, using the cushy equipment to help you reach the utmost comfort.

I spend long bouts of time engrossed in my book with no interruptions or disturbances other than the crackle of the fire. Soaking up the nature, interludes of slow-paced strolls around the lake (hoping and praying to bump into the infamous Bever clan) filled much of my time. I couldn’t quite muster up the courage to dip into the lake but there were others brave enough to take the plunge into the nearly freezing temperatures, I cheered on from the dock with towels at the ready! I think I’d be more accustomed to the wild swimming, paddleboarding and canoeing that takes place in the summertime.

Untethered from expectations about what this weekend would bring, I came away with an unanticipated wealth of takeaways, and not the greasy kind! I rarely lean into time alone and found my thoughts unravelling in the hush, bringing a better perspective on the dilemmas I’m currently facing. Food diversity, an area I try and dismally fail at conquering, falling back to the same salmon rice bowl and chicken salad on repeat, is something I want to prioritise, starting with a trip to the local greengrocers.

The crux of the ‘Wild Weekends’ is the power of nature, from the organically-grown food to the guided nature walks and the passionate people who translate the story of 42 Acres, every element is laced with what nature has to offer. I’ve got a newfound knowledge of Bevers and ornamental edible plants, thanks to Russel and Raff, but most importantly the culmination of nature-inspired endeavours brought me back down to earth. Wrapped up in city living, time immersed in nature should be prescribed to cleanse our souls!

The 5 Wellbeing Habits I Adopted After Visiting The Bothy At Heckfield Place

As I sit in The Bothy’s Sauna, eyes closed, tuned into the music as warm air wafts over me, I feel better than I have for a long time. After months of stress and anxiety (due largely to parenting challenges), it had not only taken its toll on my mind but it had begun showing up in my body too. Eczema around my eyes and mouth, gray hairs accelerating at the rate of knots, and unexplained back and shoulder pains – these were signs I knew I had to start looking after myself again. Having heard about The Bothy by Wildsmith at Heckfield Place I was drawn to go there as soon as it opened its doors. Additionally I had completely fallen in love with its resident skincare brand Wildsmith – which is helping treat the skin ailments I’m battling. After speaking with their experienced team (more on them later) it was settled that I was to experience two things whilst at The Bothy; the Sauna Medicine and Cold Water Immersion plus the Wildsmith ‘Time’ treatment – two hours and 15 minutes of what can only be described as pure heaven. And whilst, the massage treatment was undeniably brilliant, and helped soothe a lot of those aches and pains that had taken residence in my body, it was the Sauna Medicine that seemed to get deep within my soul and shift something surmountable both mentally and physically. Wellness is at the very core of what The Bothy offers – and everyone from the receptionist to the highly trained wellbeing practitioners and masseuses embodies an incredible dedication to ensuring that Bothy goers are ensconced in a cocoon of barefooted relaxation from the moment you enter the doors. So much so, that when it was my time to leave I felt as though they had somehow changed the landscape of what wellness was to me and how I could maintain my learnings into my daily life. After spending time with Kim, their Head of Education for Wildsmith, Reka, their hugely knowledgeable and spiritual Director of Spa, Emma, the Wellbeing Curator and Katherine, General Manager, Wildsmith Skin – their combined wellbeing experience could match that of some of the greatest wellness gurus and the lessons I took away were invaluable…

TIME IS A TEACHER

Do not underestimate the importance of time. The Bothy places huge importance on time as a healer and yet in the real world we often look at it as one of our biggest limiters. With no clocks anywhere in the spa, guests can relax fully, letting time pass as it should. If you need to be made aware of an appointment one of the staff will subtly give you notice. Reka believes that taking time to connect with yourself in this busy, fast-paced, digital world is essential for overall well-being. As is sitting with things that feel uncomfortable and really working through them – that also takes time – and if we rush this process and try and move on then it is going to come back in one way or another.

COMMUNITY HEALS

Reka talked alot about her experience with tribes in Africa and also learning about rituals from Latvia – both of which have been incorporated into the Sauna Medicine. Saying this doesn’t actually do justice to the incredible way that Reka has weaved those experiences into The Bothy – but suffice to say that you simply have to try it for yourself to realise how powerful it is. What is undeniable is that we have shut ourselves off in the Western world and operate much more individually when it comes to everything from parenting to work life (work-from-home has further isolated us all). Community is a powerful and effective way to feel better – after all a problem shared is a problem halved. The Sauna Medicine encompassed a body scrub in the steam room from one of the wellbeing practitioners taking us through the ritual and this simple act of care and service made me feel so supported and taken care of – when it is usually me that is doing the serving at home. This shift in perspective was a game-changer. We all need supporting – especially the caregivers in this world.

INCORPORATE HEAT

I have spent the last two years incorporating cold water into my life. And whilst that still has its place – I forgot about how healing heat can be too. I am a lover of all things hot – hot yoga, hot holidays, hot baths… Saunas – I had forgotten about entirely and I am delighted to be re-introduced to them. Having been used for thousands of years (The Mayans used sweat lodges 3000 years ago) and still a very popular wellbeing practice amongst Finns, Latvians and Swedes (amongst others), I am excited to incorporate hot therapies into my life again. Health benefits include detoxification, increased metabolism, increased blood circulation, pain reduction, antiaging, skin rejuvenation, improved cardiovascular function, improved immune function, improved sleep, stress management, and relaxation. Let’s embrace heat again.

PERSONAL GROWTH FOR ALL

Something that struck me about the way The Bothy is run is the amount that the leading staff members put into looking after their own team. They go to great lengths to ensure that their staff experience their own personal growth journeys and are fully immersed in the rituals that they then take their guests through – this translates into an unbelievable guest experience. It is almost the part that you can’t quite put your finger on whilst you are there. You feel transported to another world, it feels like the wellness game has gone up a level because the Bothy team are the real deal and this authenticity allows you to fully relax and hand yourself over to them.

IMMERSE IN NATURE

We’ve all heard the studies. It is conclusive – being around nature is healing to humans. According to TIME magazine, “in one early study, Yoshifumi Miyazaki, a forest-therapy expert and researcher at Chiba University in Japan, found that people who spent 40 minutes walking in a cedar forest had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which is involved in blood pressure and immune-system function, compared with when they spent 40 minutes walking in a lab”. There are thousands of other studies out there that deliver the same conclusion. The Bothy does an excellent job of weaving natural elements from the Heckfield Estate into its treatments, from the ingredients in the oils to the berries and teas that are given as part of the rituals. It connects you to the place you are in and makes you feel grounded and calm and human. Nature somehow knows what we need more than we do and will go to that part of you to fix it so it’s time to start letting nature in – not in small ways, but big ones.

Almond Milk Iced Coffee

Another stunning recipe from Brooke, founder of A Conscious Collection! This is her Almond Milk Iced Coffee recipe for those hot, summer days!

It’s summer and whilst I love coffee, I don’t love sweating over my long black when it’s 35+ degrees outside. In my teens I loved ice coffees, it was something my mum and I would treat ourselves to when we were hot and bothered after shopping for hours on end. These days? You definitely won’t find me ordering a sugar-loaded iced coffee; instead, I make my own Almond Milk Iced Coffee. With simple ingredients such as almond milk, a dairy/sugar-free ice-cream a dash of maple syrup and a double espresso, you have yourself a clean, healthy and refreshing drink making it the perfect afternoon pick-me-up without forgoing your daily coffee.

Ingredients

1 double shot espresso

2-3 scoops of hazelnut dairy free coconut yoghurt. (Try Coyo brand)

1 tbs pure maple syrup

1 cup of almond milk.

Cacao nibs for crunch.

Method

Scoop 2 – 3 scoops of icecream into a tall glass.

Drizzle the maple syrup over the ice cream.

Pour the almond milk into the glass and lastly add the espresso.

Top with cacao nibs for crunch.

Stir with a long spoon or a straw, or simply place all in a blender to create an iced espresso smoothie.

Beauty SOS: What To Do When Your Fake Tan Goes Wrong

Who doesn’t love a gorgeous, golden glow? Anyone? Thought not. Nothing beats that sun-kissed skin feeling, which is just one of the reasons we’re stocking up on fake tan. As temperatures (finally) start to rise and summer hints at arriving, now’s the time to add a bronzing boost to your beauty routine. Whether you’re spending a day on the beach, indulging in a park picnic or sundowners with friends, chances are you’re getting those limbs out. And – after the glorious (not) weather we’ve been subject to recently – you might be feeling and looking a little pastier than you’d like. Enter: fake tan.

The only problem? Whilst you may have dreamt of a beautiful, bronzed glow, you may have woken up to a streaky, patchy mess. Fear not, fake tan faux pas happen to the best of us. But before you hide under the blanket, take a deep breath. This guide is your lifeline to salvaging your tan and getting you back on track to a flawless, sun-kissed look in no time. These are the expert tips and product picks you need when a fake tan goes wrong.

Oil Up

“Use an oil-based product such as baby oil, which helps break down the tan. After application of the oil, take a shower and then exfoliate. This is a great method for when the tan has developed and you notice any mistakes, which could be a build-up from applying too much tan.” – Nicky Matthews, Founder of Sienna X.

Reach For A Remover

“The only thing worse than bad fake tan is the time and effort it takes trying to remove it! That’s why we developed the Rose & Caramel Purity Excel 60 Second Tan Remover – the quickest and easiest way to remove self-tan out there.” – Rosie Greenhalgh, founder of Rose & Caramel.

Have A Bath

“However, if you don’t have a specialist self-tan remover to hand, the next best thing to do is to have a long soak in the tub. Run yourself a nice, warm bath and add some of your favourite bath or body oil. Oil breaks down fake tan and together with gently exfoliating with a scrub or mitt, it will help to remove old, patchy, streaky colour. Avoid using anything too harsh or abrasive though.” – Rosie

Load Up On Lemons

When life gives you lemons, use them to fix your tan faux pas. Rich in natural alpha hydroxy acids, lemons work as a gentle exfoliator and are amazing for breaking down the top layer of the tan and toning down its intensity, particularly on stubborn areas such as palms and knuckles. Either mix with sugar or baking soda to create a paste and apply sparingly before rinsing well or soak a flannel in water infused with lemon juice, microwave it for one and a half minutes, let it cool slightly, and then gently rub it over your skin.

Use A Mitt

“Blend tan using a clean self-tan mitt, it is important to make sure that the mitt is clean and free from any old tan. Old tan on the mitt could have oxidised leaving a green tint when rubbing in tan. On areas where too much tan has been applied, use a buffing mitt or light exfoliator mitt to gently blend in areas where too much product has been applied and gathered. This can usually happen on areas such as wrists.” – Nicky

Blend With Makeup

If time is of the essence and you don’t have time to really tackle your tan problem, use a tinted moisturiser or bronzer to blend any uneven patches on your face.

Go Gradual

“Use a gradual tan lotion to blend areas that may have been missed and help to hide any tell-tale signs of tan mistakes. A gradual lotion is a great consistency to help blend and also prolong the glow of the self-tan.” – Nicky

Prevention Is Key

“To avoid a bad tan in the first place, it is important to always prepare your skin – preparation is just as important as application when it comes to tanning. Be sure to remove any old self tan the day before applying new self-tan – this also goes for shaving and waxing too. Hair removal should be done at least 24 hours before to allow your pores to close and avoid any dark ‘dotting’ on the skin.

Skin should also be free from make-up, perfume, and deodorant (unless you want green armpits!).

Before tanning, apply an oil-free moisturiser to any dry areas of skin that fake tan is prone to cling to. These include the hands, feet, knees, elbows, and ankles. Make sure to really blend in the moisturiser and this will work as a barrier to avoid discolouration. Using oil-free products is important pre and post tanning as it can break down your tan more quickly and cause it to go patchy.” – Rosie

Salsa Verde Peas, Asparagus & Ricotta

This salsa verde salad is best made when asparagus is bang in season. Peas, on the other hand, are fantastic from frozen, but if you have the time to pod a batch of fresh peas, be my guest.

INGREDIENTS – Serves 4 as a side

1 bunch of asparagus, about 250 g (90z)

250g (9oz) frozen peas

1 garlic clove, finely grated finely grated zest and juice of ½ lemon

250g (9oz) ricotta cheese small handful of mint, leaves picked

saltand freshly ground black pepper

For the salsa verde

2 anchovy fillets in oil, finely chopped

1 shallot, finely chopped

handful of flat leaf parsley (about 10g/¼oz), finely chopped handful of basil (about 10g/ ¼0z) finely chopped

1 tablespoon capers, finely chopped

2 cornichons, finely chopped

1 garlic clove, grated

2 pickled guindilla peppers, finely chopped, plus 1 tablespoon brine from the jar (or alternatively, 2 tablespoons pickled chopped jalapeños)

5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

1 tablespoon white wine vinegar

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard juice of ½ lemon

METHOD

Start by making the salsa verde. Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl, seasoning with salt and black pepper, until you have a nice chunky texture.

Break the tough ends off the asparagus and discard, then chop the stalks into chunks.

Bring a pan of salted water to the boil. Add the peas and asparagus together and boil for 2 minutes (no longer!), then drain and place in a bowl of iced water to keep them bright green and fresh.

Stir the garlic and lemon juice into the ricotta.

Drain the green vegetables from the iced water, then toss in
3 tablespoons of the salsa verde.

Spread the ricotta on to a serving plate, and pile on the green vegetables. Tear the mint leaves and scatter over, then spoon over the remaining salsa verde and season with salt, pepper and the lemon zest to finish.

This month in my May must-haves I bring you my ultimate packing list, retreats that should be on your bucket list and my ultimate plane outfit.

Wellness Retreats…

Best for YOGA: Wylder

These yoga retreats, set on the tranquil side of Ibiza, have become so popular that Founder Charlotte Townend has added more and more dates and locations (including Formentera and Menorca) to her roster each year. Expect delicious and nutritious cuisine, jewellery or pottery workshops, outdoor cinema evenings and lots of vinyasa yoga that focuses on strength and mobility. I’m booked on for one soon and am counting down the day.

Best for PILATES: Heartcore Retreat

I went to Heartcore’s Pilates Retreat in St Tropez last year and came back as a different person, which I did not expect. It was so full of joy, the itinerary included coastal walks, luxury boat trips, lots of nourishing meals and there was even some of France’s best Rosé on offer for those who wanted it (we all did!). It was the sort of trip where I went out knowing no one and came back feeling connected to nearly everyone else there. I felt like a piece of me I had lost after having kids came back to me. It was transformative.

Best for MEDI-SPA: SHA Wellness

Full disclosure – I have not been to SHA Wellness but I have wanted to visit for as long as I can remember. Set in the south of Spain (there are also SHA spas in Mexico and Allurf, an island between Dubai and Abu Dhabi) it strikes the perfect balance between health clinic and holistic retreat and their integrative method prides itself on adding years to life and quality of life to years. Their gut-health programme is hugely popular right now.

Best for HOLISTIC HEALTH: Andronis Concept Wellness Resort

Set on the island of Santorini in Greece The Andronis Concept Wellness Resort has  launched the Empower Retreat in partnership with the mindful movement community, Sanctum and renowned wellbeing experts including Editor’s fave acupuncturist, Ross J. Barr. Workshops include breath work, Kundalini yoga, primal fitness, acupuncture, astrology-themed somatic groundings, fire ceremonies and soundscapes to provide a truly unique experience to each guest.

Best for LAID BACK LUXURY: Silver Linings

Founder of Silver Linings, Chrissy Sundt was previously a Royal Ballet trained ballerina, she discovered Pilates as a fantastic way to keep herself toned, fit and strong and it quickly became an important part of her wellness routine – so much so that she retrained as a Pilates instructor and became one of the most sought after trainers in London. But Pilates isn’t the only thing Chrissy knows how to do well, luxury is also a huge part of her skill set! And the Silver Linings Retreat is no exception – set on a private Island in the Bahamas in one of the most exclusive resorts, Chrissy has curated a retreat that also feels like an exclusive holiday.

Mastering My Hormones: How Hertility Helped Me

The menstrual cycle, female hormones and (my lack of) periods have taken up a lot of airtime in my conversations over the past few months. For context, I’m 26, I have PCOS and am subsequently experiencing amenorrhea (the medical term for the absence of menstrual periods). I’ve been taking a deep dive into the intricacies of my hormones to gain clarity and insight into my body. The prequel “Coming Off The Pill” to this article, sheds light on part 1 of my journey of stepping away from contraception, only to discover the pill was, in fact, concealing polycystic ovarian syndrome frequently abbreviated to PCOS.

My knowledge of female health was vague when I first commenced this journey to get to know my body better, but I’ve thankfully come a long way with the help of Hertility. I turned to Hertility when I was in no man’s land, or let’s say ‘no women’s land’! I’d been diagnosed with PCOS, but had not the faintest clue what to do about it. It’s a slippery slope when you start using Google as your doctor but with nowhere else to turn, I found myself turning to the World Wide Web and the advice/tips were conflicting, to say the least. When I came across Hertility, it felt like I’d been thrown a lifejacket. What I needed was tailored advice, and, as I’ve come to learn, PCOS is a blanket term but that doesn’t mean to say all PCOS-suffers will have the same symptoms.

My first port of call was to air my concerns to the Hertility experts, well versed in PCOS. The initial consultation was a chance for me to outline everything I had going on, from my lifestyle, health history, menstrual cycle and my future plans to conceive. From this chat, it was decided that a full blood panelling and pelvic ultrasound screening would be the best option to give better insight. Hertility sends through an at-home blood test kit that can be done from the comfort of your living room and arranges a scan at the nearest ultrasound clinic with availability for appointments in as little as a few days away.

The results were in! I was notified within a couple of days that my blood tests were ready to view on the Health Hub section in Hertility. This easy-to-navigate display feature elevates Hertility’s testing protocol above all others in my opinion. If you’ve ever received blood test results, you’ll be aware it’s like trying to read a foreign language. The detailed hormone analysis unravels each reading with simple colour coding and an individualised explanation on what each result means for me. The analysis demystified ovarian reserve and fertility levels, ovulation and period, androgen hormone health and thyroid health. The results revealed I have significantly high oestradiol levels. As one of the main hormones that regulates your menstrual cycle, excess oestradiol may disrupt your cycle, which gave me somewhat of an answer as to why I haven’t had a period in two years!

Once my ultrasound scans had been sent back to the experts at Hertility my results could be cross-referenced to get a clearer picture of my ‘version’ of PCOS, as no two people experience PCOS in the same way. One of my main concerns was the thickness of my uterus lining due to not having a period for a considerable amount of time, causing a risk of endometrial hyperplasia. However, amidst this uncertainty, there was a glimmer of relief as the ultrasound revealed a thin lining of the uterus.  A thick uterus lining is more at risk of turning cancerous, but thanks to Hertility, I was now armed with the information that mine didn’t pose this extreme risk due to being thin, allowing me too weigh up my options without being constrained by a tight deadline which gave me huge solace and space to breathe!

The in-depth video consultation I had with Gynaecologist, Mr. Srdjan Saso, helped unpick all the nitty gritty details and was a chance for me to air my questions about what the results meant. We discussed my best options going forward and the proactive lifestyle choices I can make to better support my body.

I went one step further, speaking to Hertility’s expert dietitian, Olivia Wall, to truly understand what I can be doing to support my body via nutrition. Nutrition is such a powerful tool that can support PCOS, and until this call, I don’t think I was quite aware of how significant a role it plays. I’m well aware good nutrition is vital for overall health, I mean I work at Hip & Healthy and am completely immersed in wellness, but I thought that my currently healthy eating regime would be sufficient. Turns out, there are a few tweaks I can make that could have a positive impact.

Olivia’s top tips for me involved:

  • Following a Mediterranean-style diet based on the consumption of vegetables, fruits, pulses and wholegrains.
  • Eating foods rich in B vitamins as these are important in optimising the endocrine system
  • x2 portions of oily fish rich in Omega 3 antioxidants as it supports the reproductive cells and protects them from stress.
  • Supplement Vitamin D, as it acts as a precursor for female hormones.
  • Don’t restrict carbohydrate intake, advice online may say otherwise for PCOS but it is very important to eat wholegrain carbohydrate sources that are rich in B vitamins such as brown rice, oats, quinoa or pearl barley.

Stepping away with a wealth of female health knowledge, my journey with Hertility has been invaluable. Their proactive, personalised approach to health care is so refreshing in the minefield of women’s hormones. When you feel clueless and helpless, they are on hand to provide you with insights through the digital platform that makes the process so seamless, with all your data, bookings, results, and clinical letters stored in the Health Hub. The majority of consultations are held virtually and many of the tests can be done at home, making it convenient and stress-free. With a plethora of articles and insights, explained in layman’s terms, Hertility cuts through the noise and provides evidence-based research in one place. Attempting to get my reproductive health in order felt like a mammoth task, but I’m now much better equipped and informed to proactively deal with the problems I, and so many women out there, face around female health!

Beyond The Emergency: Dental Treatments To Consider

While many people associate dental visits with emergency situations like toothaches, broken teeth, or injuries, there are plenty of other dental treatments that can significantly improve your overall oral health, appearance, and confidence. From cosmetic enhancements to preventative measures, exploring the options available can help you achieve a healthier, more beautiful smile and potentially prevent future dental issues.

Cosmetic Dentistry Treatments

Cosmetic dentistry covers a range of treatments designed to improve the appearance of your teeth, gums, and smile. These procedures can address concerns like discoloration, misalignment, gaps, chips, or unevenly shaped teeth, helping you achieve a more attractive and confident smile.

Teeth Whitening

One of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments is teeth whitening, which can effectively remove stains and discoloration caused by factors like aging, food, beverages, or lifestyle habits like smoking. Professional teeth whitening performed by a dentist is a safe and efficient way to brighten your smile, often providing more dramatic and long-lasting results than over-the-counter whitening products.

Veneers

Veneers are thin shells made of porcelain or composite resin material that are bonded to the front surfaces of your teeth. They can be an excellent solution for addressing various cosmetic concerns, such as chipped, discolored, or misshapen teeth. Veneers can instantly transform the appearance of your smile, creating a more uniform and attractive look.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a relatively simple and cost-effective cosmetic treatment that can repair minor chips, cracks, or gaps in your teeth. The process involves applying a tooth-colored resin material to the affected area and then shaping and hardening it to blend seamlessly with your natural tooth.

Restorative Dentistry Treatments

Restorative dentistry focuses on repairing or replacing damaged or missing teeth, restoring both the function and appearance of your smile. These treatments can improve your ability to chew, speak, and maintain proper oral hygiene, as well as enhance your overall confidence.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are custom-made caps that fit over an existing tooth, protecting, and restoring its shape, size, and strength. Crowns are often recommended for teeth that have been extensively damaged by decay, cracks, or fractures, or for teeth that have undergone root canal treatment.

Dental Bridges

If you’re missing one or more teeth, dental bridges can be an effective solution for restoring your smile and maintaining proper bite alignment. A bridge consists of one or more artificial teeth (called pontics) that are supported by crowns on adjacent teeth or dental implants.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are considered the gold standard for replacing missing teeth. An implant is a small titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone, where it fuses with the bone over time. Once integrated, an artificial tooth (crown) is attached to the implant, providing a strong, stable, and natural-looking replacement for a missing tooth.

Clear Teeth Aligners

For individuals seeking a discreet and convenient way to straighten their teeth or correct bite issues, clear teeth aligners have become an increasingly popular alternative to traditional metal braces. These virtually invisible aligners gradually shift your teeth into their desired positions, allowing you to achieve a beautiful, straight smile without the aesthetic and comfort concerns associated with traditional braces.

If you’re considering orthodontic treatment, discuss the option of clear aligners with ALIGNERCO. They’ll help you to determine if it’s the right choice for your specific needs and goals.

Preventative Dental Treatments

Preventative dental care is essential for maintaining optimal oral health and avoiding more complex and costly treatments in the future. By addressing potential issues early on, you can protect your teeth, gums, and overall well-being.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are thin, plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars). These sealants act as a barrier, protecting the tooth enamel from decay-causing bacteria and plaque buildup. Sealants are particularly helpful for children and teenagers, as they can help prevent cavities in hard-to-clean areas.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Early detection is crucial when it comes to oral cancer, because it can significantly improve treatment outcomes and survival rates. During your regular dental check-ups, your dentist will perform a thorough examination of your mouth, lips, tongue, and throat to check for any signs of oral cancer or precancerous lesions.

Gum Disease Treatment

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a serious condition that can lead to tooth loss and other health complications if left untreated. Fortunately, there are various treatments available to address gum disease, depending on its severity.

Scaling And Root Planing

For mild to moderate cases of gum disease, a deep cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing may be recommended. This involves removing plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline, as well as smoothing the tooth roots to prevent future bacteria buildup.

Periodontal Surgery

In more advanced cases of gum disease, where pockets of infection have formed between the teeth and gums, periodontal surgery may be necessary. This can involve procedures like pocket reduction, regenerative procedures, or even gum grafts to restore lost gum tissue.

By exploring the various dental treatments available beyond emergency situations, you can take a proactive approach to maintaining optimal oral health, enhancing your appearance, and preventing future dental issues. Remember, regular check-ups and open communication with your dentist are key to identifying and addressing any potential concerns early on.
