What’s On Sadie’s Christmas Wish List

I have now realised that, rather brilliantly, my husband actually shops directly off my wish list here on Hip & Healthy. To that end, I have thought even harder about what to add to it this year’s. You’ll be sure to find the usual, annual pair of running trainers but also as we lean further into countryside living, expect beautiful home accessories and walking attire, which more than reveals my age! Talking of age, as someone yet to embrace botox (although never say never) you’ll also find a host of skincare and bathroom delights that ensure to pamper and ensconce whilst also turn back time. But, as we all know, especially in such turbulent global political times, the real gift this Christmas will be spending it with my family. Wishing you and your family a very happy holiday x

Carrie Elizabeth, Enamel Star Set Ring, £100

I am loving celestial jewelry at the moment. This one is 14k Gold Vermeil adorned with beautiful sparkling star set cz stones. It also looks amazing when stacked with other gold rings in the collection.

Votary, 24 Hour Time Repair Kit, £95

I would love to give my evening and morning beauty ritual a complete overhaul with Votary’s new Intense Night Oil and am already obsessed with their Super Seed Serum. This kit has all of their very best products that promise to get your skin glowing.

ANNA + NINA, Holly Jolly Desert Plate, £15

I dream of the day that I can go full grotto mode at home with all our home accessories transforming into Christmas versions of themselves. These plates would look stunning on any festive table.

Dr Hauschka, Winter Warming Bath Duo, £24

Compiled of the delightfully wintery-smelling Spruce Warming Bath Essence (100ml) and Winter Soap, this is the perfect little stocking filler that will instantly take your baths to the next level.

Nike Juniper Trail 2 GORE-TEX, £104.95

I went on a run with a friend recently who was not wearing GORE-TEX shoes and was squelching her way around the 7k course, whereas I, in my GORE-TEX, remained mostly nice and dry. I am forever wearing through my trainers and hoping for a fresh pair to start the new year with.

Matilda Goad, Butter Dish, £55

For far too long I have struggled on without a dish to put my (vegan) butter in. We have resorted to buying the soft, margarine-y type butter for both me and the kids and quite frankly – I am fed up with it! Finally, I have found a butter dish worthy of any breakfast spread!

Jess Wheeler, Napkin Holders,

Designed, hand-cast and hand-cut by Jess and her team of artisans, these brass nature-inspired napkin holders are perfect for Christmas tables through to summer. Inspired by the rugged Welsh landscapes where Jess lives, each of her pieces feels unique and sparks tablescaping joy like nothing else.

Forest Essentials, Van Vatika Skin and Hair Care Box, £40

Forest Essentials is an authentic, traditional skincare brand with its foundations in the ancient science of Ayurveda and their gift boxes are just beautiful, each featuring a unique illustration and filled with deliciously scented products.

Neom Bedtime Hero Magnesium Body Butter, £36

I love anything and everything from Neom. They are a total crowd-pleaser at Christmas and I have yet to find someone that doesn’t want something from the range. The winner for me is their Magnesium range. I have their bath milks already – so that leaves me wishing for their body butter!

Nadiya Hussain, Simple Spices Recipe Book, £26

My favourite bake-off winner has released a new book and I am desperate to get my hands on a copy. My New Years resolution is to be more adventurous in the kitchen and cook more so this will help me to embrace my new foodie rituals!

Hermés Enamel Bracelet, £290

My husband bought me one of these bracelets for one of our first anniversaries together when we were just boyfriend and girlfriend! Now, I’d love to add to the one I have with some more and this one looks beautiful.

Wylder Yoga Retreat, £POA

This year what I am really, really am wishing for is a spot on one of Charlotte Townend’s legendary Wylder Yoga Retreats. Set in Ibiza and filled with lots of yoga, nutritious food and the odd mindful pottery class – I honestly can’t think of a better present than some ‘me time’.

The London Dispensary CBD Bath Bomb, £12

I just love the smell of this Citrus Bath Bomb – it is so uplifting and takes my bathing to that next level! Packed with avocado, pomegranate, rosehip oil, argan and shea butter, and infused with a highly effective 100mg of premium CBD, it leaves my skin feeling soft and my mind feeling zen!

WHOOP 4.0, £16 per month (1st month free)

I have become a bit obsessed with tracking my steps (I know I am late to the party !). It got me thinking about tracking other health markers too and I just keep hearing about how amazing the WHOOP band is at tracking everything from sleep to stress.

Fable + Mane Healthy Hair Heroes, £39

I have always paid little attention to my hair… and it’s showing! So now I need to sort it out!! This gift box from Fable + Mane, famed for producing amazing silky hair, is how I am going to start!

Acai Outdoors Thermal Seamless Base Layer, £49

There is nothing that spoils a walk or a run for me more than being cold, which is why I love a base layer. I get that this might not be the coolest thing I have in my wardrobe but it certainly gets a lot of use during the winter months. All hail the base layer!

H&H Reviews: San Clemente Palace Kempinski, Venice

Venice might not be the first destination you would think of for a ‘Hip & Healthy’ escape; however, in a city with no cars, you can spend your days walking the streets discovering hidden corners of history as well as endless restaurants, cafés and bars serving fresh and delicious Italian food. After spending our days exploring the city, San Clemente Palace Kempinski Venice was the ideal place for us to stay.

This haven of luxury is set on its own private island, dating back to the 11th Century, and only ten minutes by boat from San Marco Square in the middle of Venice.   Over the centuries the island has played various roles, including a monastery, a hospital and a military garrison to name a few.  It’s the perfect escape from a day spent sightseeing in busy Venice. With an abundance of trees, green open spaces ideal for Yoga sessions, a beautiful swimming pool, its own natural lake, golf pitch and putt, tennis court, jogging trail and volleyball, there is plenty to do to keep yourself active.

Meanwhile, for a more relaxing experience, the award-winning Merchant of Venice Spa at the hotel is the place to unwind and relax.  Choose from the endless spa experiences including Hamman, Sauna, steam rooms and fitness studio. The Spa treatments have been beautifully curated using oils and perfumes carefully created to evoke ancient Oriental traditions which have been imported by Venetian merchants over the centuries. We tried the ‘Massaggio Rosa Moceniga’ massage.  Our therapist ensured we had a relaxing yet therapeutic experience, with the use of jojoba, almond and argan oil leaving our skin glowing and dewy. The spa hero treatment must be the ‘Gold Mask’ – an innovative treatment and the first in Italy to use 24-carat gold leaves. The treatment uses eleven gold leaves with two serums.   The vitamin E base in the serums ensures that the micro-active particles of gold are absorbed by the skin – to soften, tone and stimulate the cells in the skin, resulting in a glowing complexion.

Known by locals as the ‘Island of Art’ and part of the hotel’s ‘hip’ attraction are the visiting art exhibitions that run throughout the year, showcasing bold installations through thought-provoking paintings. During our stay, Seung-Hwan Kim’s ‘Organism’ exhibition was on and displayed around the hotel grounds. It made our walks and runs around the island even more interesting, observing the artist’s passion to showcase his exploration of the world’s natural wonders.

To whet your appetite, the menu options are deliciously inviting, where vegetables and herbs come from the hotel’s own kitchen garden. As well as fine Italian fayre being offered at the restaurants, Japanese cuisine is available at the Buddha Bar. The hotel has a fine selection of drinks and juices on offer, as well as its own exclusive San Clemente wines – which include zero-sugar Prosecco.

We stayed in a Grand Deluxe room, overlooking the beautiful gardens, quiet and secluded with sumptuous linens and beds, the perfect place to rest and rejuvenate.

10 Wellness Habits To Adopt If You Suffer From SAD

With the change of season bringing with it shorter days and cooler mornings it can be easy to fall out of love with your current wellness regime. “Finding the motivation becomes harder as the nights draw in, so changing up your routine to include mood-boosting workouts, nutritious food and helpful rituals is vital for combating fatigue and keeping your energy levels high. This is even more important if you struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD),” says PT and wellness expert Rachael Sacerdoti.

Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression that occurs at specific times of the year, typically during the autumn and winter months when there is less sunlight. The lack of sunlight exposure can affect our circadian rhythm and lead to a range of symptoms, including low energy, mood swings, and a general sense of lethargy. While SAD can be challenging, adopting certain wellness habits can help mitigate its impact on your mental health.

Here are 10 daily habits to incorporate into your routine if you suffer from SAD.

Morning Light Exposure: Make it a daily habit to spend 20-30 minutes in the morning sunlight or use a light therapy box. Position it at eye level while you read, have breakfast, or engage in a calming activity to kickstart your circadian rhythm.

HIIT Exercise Breaks: Integrate short, high-intensity exercise breaks into your daily schedule. These can be as brief as 10-15 minutes and might include activities like quick sprints, jumping jacks, or a fast-paced workout video.

Omega-3-Rich Snacks: Include omega-3-rich snacks in your daily diet. Keep a stash of walnuts or chia seeds to add to your yoghurt or oatmeal. Small dietary changes can have a cumulative positive effect on mood over time.

Mindful Breathing Moments: Set aside a few minutes each day for mindful breathing exercises. This can be done during a break at work, while commuting, or before bedtime. Focus on deep, intentional breaths to centre yourself and reduce stress.

Cosy Corners at Home: Create cosy corners in your home using soft lighting and comfortable elements. Ensure that you have a designated space where you can relax and unwind, fostering a sense of comfort and warmth.

Micro-Goals for Tasks: Break down daily tasks into micro-goals. Instead of focusing on a large project, set small, achievable goals for each day. Celebrate the completion of these micro-goals to foster a sense of accomplishment.

Daily Cognitive Check-In: Engage in a brief daily cognitive check-in. Take a moment to reflect on your thoughts, be it through journaling or just finding a quiet moment and challenge any negative patterns. This self-awareness practice can be a powerful tool in managing the mental aspects of SAD.

Connect with Nature: Make it a habit to connect with nature each day. Whether it’s a short walk in a nearby park, a moment to appreciate your garden, or simply stepping outside to get fresh air, spending time in nature has been shown to boost mood and reduce stress. This daily habit provides a refreshing break and helps counter the effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder by exposing you to natural light and the calming influence of the outdoors.

Plan Daily Winter Activities: Infuse your daily routine with winter activities you enjoy. Whether it’s a brisk winter walk tuning into a podcast you love, trying a new seasonal recipe, or engaging in a winter sport, having a daily activity to look forward to can positively impact your mood.

Dim Lights Before Bed: Develop an evening routine where you dim the lights in your home an hour before bedtime. Engage in relaxing activities, such as reading a book or taking a warm bath, to signal to your body that it’s time to wind down.

No.42 by GuestHouse- Margate’s New Boutique Hotel

Once a sleepy seaside town, Margate has undergone somewhat of a metamorphosis, emerging as the cool-cultured destination of Kent. The gentrified hub has been spruced up with art galleries, vintage shops, independent cafes, oyster bars and craft beer microbreweries. Attracting a hip crowd, not dissimilar to the folks you tend to find frequenting East London, Margate has a stream of new trendy restaurants and hotels opening with gleaming vistas over the sandy beach. Boutique hotel, No.42 by GuestHouse, slots in swimmingly with Margate’s renaissance. Idyllic for a mini-break exploring the character-filled town, No.42 encompasses a restaurant, cafe, rooftop bar, treatment rooms and bedrooms spread across a beautifully revamped Victorian townhouse.

Perched in front of Margate’s sprawling bay, No.42 is the hotelier group’s third location. Coveting their coherent contemporary design, Guesthouse’s signature touches carry themself to their newest outpost…a pantry to raid for midnight snacking along with record players in all 21 bedrooms. Rightfully so, the heritage details of the Victorian manor have been preserved, with modern embellishments to bring it up to speed with Guesthouse’s noteworthy interiors. Beach-chic meets French-bistro vibes as you’re greeted at the check-in desk and handed over your paperweight gold key, embossed with the trademark ‘G’. The outlook of the North Sea will catch your eye, whether it is glistening with the sun beaming down or pelting with rain, it’s captivating nonetheless.

Twirling out of the stairwell each floor unravels a set of ice-cream-licked doors, like a scene out of Charlie & The Chocolate Factory. The bedrooms star a grand queen-sized bed with a plush upholstered curved headboard, backdropped by a freehand mural illustrated by local artist, Laura Ann Coates, the pièce de résistance. The warm neutral palette blends well with the brass finishings, hessian fabrics and oaky furnishings for an overall Pinterest-worthy space.

Beneath the hotel sits, Field Trip, the retro seaside cafe with a countertop full of nourishing salads, sarnies and freshly baked goods. After a breezy stroll, Field Trip is perfect for a spot of lunch or a pot of tea and cake. The pick-n-mix salad bar is our top pick, from wild black rice, bulgar wheat, roasted sweet potato and goat’s cheese with your choice of grilled tiger prawns, salmon, beef or falafel.

An unassuming doorway at the back of the cafe leads into a secret lair of treatment rooms. Bespoke therapies at the helm of healing hands take place in the vault-esque nooks, dressed with bouquets of wild-dried blooms. The rituals are an anecdote of relaxation and renewal, top-to-toe pampering in the forms of massages, scrubs and facials. Curated with the intention to make you feel connected, the Copper Cove treatment for two is the dreamiest romantic experience. The treatment starts with a soak in an inviting copper tub filled with magnesium salts, sipping on a glass of English fizz or non-alcoholic bubbles. Once you’ve made you’re way onto the treatment beds, the therapists will join you for a heavenly back, neck, and shoulder massage soundtracked by lulling melodies. Finish with your choice of a foot massage or a facial, topped off with a scalp massage to release any tension.

Pearly Cow, Guesthouse’s ‘land meets sea’ restaurant, celebrates British flavours while embracing the art of culinary craftsmanship. Sourcing freshly caught seafood, highest-welfare meat and organic plants, this menu is beaming with dishes you’ll want to try from yellowfin tuna crudo to Hen of the Woods spelt risotto and a Kentish lamb rack scattered with broad beans and heritage tomato. Prepared in an open robata grill kitchen, the meat and fish aren’t overly tampered with to let the produce do the talking, and the result is sublime. Don’t miss up the opportunity to try the decadent Seafood Platter, it’s quite the spectacle, brimming with oysters, prawns, Cornish crab, cockles and mussels.

Greeted by the fresh sea breeze, this boutique hotel is idyllic for a mini-break in the seaside town of Margate. Embodying a home-from-home ambience, Guesthouse hotels are growing in numbers, with an outpost in Brighton set to open in 2024. As for now, head down to Margate and rest your head at this gem of a hotel.

Positioned along the bustling pedestrian thoroughfare, mere steps from the church square and ski lift, the ultra-stylish Cœur de Megève hotel has undergone a remarkable transformation under the creative direction of renowned interior designer Sybille de Margerie. Departing from the traditional ski chalet concept, de Margerie envisioned a contemporary mountain retreat characterized by brushed walnut panelling, plush furnishings, and vibrant hues. Boasting 38 rooms and suites of various configurations, some featuring open-plan bathrooms, others with village-view terraces, and family rooms nestled in the attic beneath sloping ceilings, the hotel offers diverse accommodation options. The expansive ski domain surrounding Megève, encompassing 445km of slopes with the ‘Evasion Mont Blanc’ lift pass, includes the spa town of St Gervais and an additional 120km of slopes in Les Contamines. Back at the hotel, guests can bask in the cosy ambience of evenings by the fireplace in the lounge or opt for the après-ski vibe on the covered terrace. The main restaurant, Le Cœur, opening onto the village, serves up a seasonal, elegant, and delectable cuisine, showcasing the richness of the Savoy region. As dusk settles, patrons can retreat to Le Meige for custom and classic cocktails.
