If autumn had a uniform, it would start with cashmere. That perfect blend of warmth, comfort and quiet luxury makes it the piece we reach for on repeat. Whether it’s layered under a coat for a crisp morning walk, or worn with leggings for a slow Sunday at home.
This season, we’ve rounded up our favourite cashmere jumpers which are timeless, tactile and beautifully made. From high-street heroes to independent gems, these are the styles worth curling up in all winter long.
We’re obsessed with this slogan jumper from the new M&S x Bella Freud collection. Spun from 100% pure cashmere, it’s soft, slouchy, and carries that signature Bella attitude. The “Kind” slogan adds just the right touch of personality, making it the jumper you’ll throw on for everything from school runs to Sunday brunch.
A sleek, modern take on the classic knit. We love COS for its clean lines and understated elegance and this soft grey number works as well at brunch as it does in the office.
Soft, slouchy and irresistibly warm,Hush knows how to make knitwear feel modern and easy. The burgundy tone is perfect for cosy weekends in or pub lunches out.
This small, sustainable brand crafts heirloom-quality knits that feel as good as they look. The subtle diamond pattern adds interest to an otherwise simple silhouette.
With its flattering V-neck and rich oxblood tone, this jumper is an easy wardrobe upgrade. The merino blend adds breathability and shape, its luxe without the price tag.
Chunky yet refined, this Arket favourite feels like being wrapped in a cloud. We love the dark blue hue as a chic alternative to black for winter layering.
Short, chic and a little bit playful, this cardigan works beautifully over dresses or high-waisted trousers. The perfect layering piece for mild autumn days.
For those looking for the perfect layering piece, this wool-cashmere blend has that effortless, draped perfection we love from Citizens of Humanity. It is elevated yet perfectly relaxed.
Part cardigan, part statement piece, this Reiss’s brushed cashmere feels cloud-soft and looks impeccably tailored. Ideal for workdays that turn into dinners.
Irene Forte, Founder and CEO of Irene Forte Skincare, reveals the products and practices that get her through the day.
The first thing I do when I wake up is drink the glass of water I have by my bed. I have an under-active thyroid, so I then take levothyroxine. You’re meant to take it 30 minutes before you eat anything or have coffee, so I have to do that right away.
I used to be a morning person, but work’s gotten really busy and now I’m productive between 10pm and midnight because I work a lot with the US. So, I actually started waking up a bit later and my poor husband gets the kids every morning [laughs]. Now I’m up around 7.45am, or sometimes I manage to push it to 8.
First I do my shower and skincare routine. I wash my hair once a week, and I mainly use Davines products. We now have an amenities range, so in the shower I use the apricot body cleanser, which I love. I also love the Dr. Bronner’s ‘Baby Mild All-One Magic Soap’, which I use on my kids as well. I then use one of my body oils – I love the rose one.
When it comes to my skin, I start with my almond cleansing milk – which I can’t live without. It’s cream-based and very nourishing and hydrating. At the moment I’m using Clinisept+, which is an antibacterial antimicrobial spray with hypochlorous acid. It’s great to keep rosacea and breakouts at bay. I’ve always suffered from rosacea and I’ve managed to control it over the last year or so.
I then use my ‘Triple Level Hyaluronic Serum’, which is very lightweight, absorbs beautifully, and is easy to use. During the day I’ll follow that with the hibiscus serum, which has a neuropeptide from hibiscus seeds that’s clinically proven to smooth wrinkles. It also has lifting ingredients like green pea polypeptides and tetra peptides.
My olive eye cream is really hydrating, lightweight, and is great under makeup as it doesn’t make it cakey. I also use the hibiscus night cream during the day. It’s quite rich, but it absorbs really nicely and it keeps my skin dewy and hydrated. In terms of SPF, I use Heliocare 360 ‘Oil Gel-Free SPF 50’. In the winter, I sometimes use the La Prunier ‘Plum Screen’ instead.
Makeup wise, at the moment I really love the Westman Atelier complexion drops. They’re so hydrating and not heavy at all. I really like that dewy look. I also use the RMS Beauty UnCoverup concealer under my eyes or the Westman Atelier foundation stick. I always use a brow liner, and that’s it – I don’t wear mascara or anything.
I shouldn’t say, but I’m really not into fragrance. I like my products because they smell nice and they give me that fragrance experience, but without lingering too long. I don’t like anything that lingers.
Once I’m ready, I head downstairs for my coffee and breakfast. I used to have a really nice breakfast but I don’t really anymore. The first thing I have is an almond milk latte, which I know isn’t very healthy, but needs must! I then rush to take my daughter to nursery, and on the way to the office I might grab a juice.
In my bag, I love carrying around my triple level hyaluronic serum and my helichrysum toner. They’re both small and very hydrating, so I like to give my skin a boost during the day. I often have some makeup in my bag too, in case I have to go out for a meeting and need to top up. We’re actually about to launch a new lip product, so samples of those are in my handbag at the moment. I’m a little bit addicted to Ombar chocolate – there’s always a pistachio one in my bag or in the fridge in the office. I try and wait till after lunch to start digging into that [laughs]. Aside from that, I always have water, my computer, and a notepad.
When I’m in the office, my day is full of meetings and calls, all day long. Half of our team is in the US, so afternoons tend to be jam packed with calls. I’m still very much running the business, so everything from marketing, email content, social, sales – so I’m always having calls with various heads of departments.
After I leave work, I go home, put the kids to bed, have dinner with my husband, and then work until late. I eat really well – lots of super foods, fresh foods, lots of vegetables and fruit. I’ve always had a very balanced diet with lots of Mediterranean food, which was part of my upbringing. I used to take a lot of supplements, but it’s more about being organised about it. I still try to take vitamins D and C, but am I consistent in taking them daily? No.
My evening skincare routine is quite similar to my day one, but with a few different steps. I use my almond cleansing milk, then the helichrysum toner, which hydrates and plumps. Then I use the ‘Triple Hyaluronic Serum’ again, and then one drop of the ‘Phytomelatonin Rejuvenating Serum’ on targeted areas – a little goes a long way. I also have a 20% prescription azelaic acid for rosacea and hyperpigmentation from pregnancies, which unfortunately is about keeping it under control basically.
We’re launching a new eye cream next year, so I’ve got samples of this delicious, rich eye cream that I use at night, and I follow that with the ‘Hibiscus Night Cream. If I’ve got loads of time, I might do an ‘Apricot Penta-Acid Polish’ and a pistachio face mask, but that tends to be more on the weekends. If my husband goes out on a Friday night, I might have a bath with bath salts and be a bit more indulgent with my routine.
I watch a lot of football – I’m a big Chelsea fan. That’s my moment to relax, even though it’s actually quite stressful to watch [laughs]. I watch a lot of the Premier League, Champions League, Match of The Day… I wanted to be a football manager when I was a kid – I was obsessed with football. It’s a nice distraction from everything else.
I always have a book on my bedside table, but has it been opened recently? No. [Laughs]. I’m quite enjoying the LYMA ‘Laser Pro’, which is also on my bedside table, and sometimes I write emails with one hand and use that with the other. There’s also the ‘Sculpta Pro’, which has a really nice microcurrent radio frequency, and I really like that tool. I sometimes use Clinisept and then go over my skin with that. This summer I was super consistent and did it very night, but then when you’re back to reality and working, it’s more challenging.
I think I’ve become quite resilient to stress over time, as I’ve had a business for some time now. I don’t really feel heavily stressed ever, despite obviously lots of stressful things always happening in the business. I used to do a lot more exercise, which was a great tool. I really try to do something three times a week, and that tends to be barre or Pilates. I’m still trying to work out where to slot that in, because it’s actually easier to do it over lunch rather than in the evening as I’m really tired once the kids are in bed and I’m not in the mood.
My office is walking distance from home, so I walk to the office and back every day, which is a good 40 minute walk. During that time I can’t be on my phone trying to respond to emails, so there are little ways in which I stay active.
I did a vedic meditation course, but the reality is I only do it when I’m not that busy, ironically, so I’m not sure it’s become a great tool. But generally speaking, I sleep very well and I’ve never had problems sleeping.
Time just goes too quickly. There aren’t enough hours in the day at the moment. The reality is, it’s very difficult to balance two young kids and a business, and my life is all about the business and my kids right now. Maybe at some point the social piece will come back in. It’s weird as you want time to pass quickly, but then you don’t. I can’t believe my daughter is already two and half, it feels like she was born yesterday. It’s bittersweet.
As the days shorten and a crisp breeze edges in, our wardrobes (and home rituals) begin to shift too. Think cosy textures, warming colours, and those little luxuries that make darker evenings feel indulgent rather than dreary. Below are the fashion and lifestyle pieces we’re currently lusting after. These items promise comfort, style, and a little spark of joy as we step into the colder months.
We love this gorgeous, soft, toffee-hued cashmere with its mix of cable and fringe detailing. It’s the kind of jumper that just makes everything better, whether you’re pulling it on with jeans, layering it over a skirt, or even styling it with a slip dress. Snuggly enough for lazy afternoons at home, yet chic enough to hold its own at a dinner party, it’s that rare piece that does it all. And with the playful fringe adding a touch of movement, it feels just as right for leaf-crunching walks as it does for curling up on the sofa.
These jeans are the kind you’ll find yourself reaching for again and again, they just work. With a flattering high rise, wide leg, and that effortlessly elongating fit, they’re comfortable yet instantly pulled-together. We love that Citizens of Humanity also champions more sustainable denim practices, so they feel good in every sense. Throw them on with a chunky knit and trainers for everyday ease, or add a blazer when you want a touch of polish without losing that relaxed vibe.
A true autumn essential, these beautifully crafted dark brown suede boots strike that perfect balance between cosy comfort and Scandinavian practicality. Lined with soft, natural sheepskin, they’re the kind of shoes that make every step feel indulgent, whether you’re padding around the house on a slow Sunday morning or heading out for a countryside walk. The minimalist Scandinavian design gives them an effortless chicness, while the practical sole means they’re ready for real life (yes, even on those drizzly school-run mornings). Pair them with relaxed denim or a knitted dress and you’ve got autumn style wrapped up, quite literally in warmth.
Another hero from WNU, this oversized brushed check shirt in deep greens and blues is basically autumn in clothing form. It’s cosy, roomy, and instantly gives that borrowed-from-the-countryside feel. Wear it open over a knit for easy layering or button it up as a shacket when the weather’s milder. It’s the kind of plaid that takes us right back to our younger days with oversized checks thrown over a tee or polo neck with baggy jeans. A true comfort piece that still manages to look effortlessly cool.
This cashmere neck-tie knit is one of those pieces that feels special without trying too hard. Tie it loose and casual for everyday ease, or knot it neatly for a little extra polish (and warmth). It layers beautifully, over a crisp shirt, under your favourite coat, or even with a simple jumper for a touch of personality. Cosy, elegant, and just a bit playful, it’s a winter wardrobe win.
These trainers are beautifully neutral and soft, making them the kind of pair that just goes with everything. From cosy knits to relaxed loungewear, they’ll quietly elevate whatever you’re wearing ( and they also do some really cool charms). We love them styled with earthy socks for a tonal look, or contrasted with deeper shades to really show off their understated charm. Easy, versatile, and the sort of shoes you’ll keep by the door all season.
There’s something effortlessly chic about an oversized navy knit, and Beyond Nine’s Kimi Jumper nails that balance between relaxed and refined. Made from expertly crafted merino wool, it drapes just right. It is slouchy enough for comfort, but with a shape that still feels pulled together. The deep navy hue is timeless, while the wide ribbed neckline and cuffs give it that elevated edge. It’s the kind of jumper you’ll wear on repeat: school run, Sunday brunch, or wrapped up on a countryside escape. Pairs perfectly with wide-leg trousers or denims for an easy, seasonless look that feels every bit as good as it looks.
LILYSILK’s new loungewear launch is anything but basic. These sweats are elevated, comfy, and designed with just enough tailoring to feel pulled together. They’re the kind of bottoms you’ll happily wear from sofa to street, especially when paired with the matching Half-Zip jumper. Effortless, relaxed, but still with that “I made an effort” vibe we all love.
The ultimate back-door hero, this gardening loafer is as practical as it is stylish. Lined with cosy sherpa to keep your feet snug, it’s perfect for pottering in the garden, stepping out with the dog, or nipping into town. Designed to be functional but chic, it’s the kind of shoe you’ll end up slipping on far more often than you expect.
As the nights get colder, there’s nothing better than fresh, snuggly pyjamas and this Tencel/modal set is a dream. Silky soft, breathable, and gentle on the skin, it’s perfect for those slow Sunday mornings with coffee in hand and a blanket wrapped around you. Chic enough to wear around the house all day, it makes lounging feel like a little luxury.
Did you know your mum’s reproductive health could hold vital clues to your own? New research continues to show just how deeply our hormonal health is shaped by genetics and now, Hertility, the pioneering women’s health platform, is encouraging us to start those all-important intergenerational conversations with its latest campaign, ‘Hereditary Talks’.
For generations, women’s health topics, from periods and fertility to menopause, have been shrouded in silence. Many mothers never spoke openly about their experiences, leaving daughters uninformed and often unprepared for what’s to come. Hertility’s new initiative aims to change that by creating space for honest, heart-to-heart discussions between women and their mothers.
“Talking to our mums about their menstrual cycles, fertility experiences, or menopause isn’t just emotional, it’s informative,” says Dr Helen O’Neill, CEO and founder of Hertility. “Cycle patterns, menopause timing, and even conditions like endometriosis or pregnancy complications can be hereditary. The more we know, the better equipped we are to protect our health.”
At the heart of the campaign is a filmed content series featuring candid, one-to-one conversations between influential women and their mothers, covering everything from painful periods and fertility challenges to menopause and the taboos that still linger today. The result? A moving reminder that by understanding our mothers’ stories, we can better navigate our own.
You can watch the ‘Hereditary Talks’ series here and download Hertility’s conversation guide here to help start (re)productive discussions at home.
For most of my life, anxiety felt like an uninvited guest who refused to leave. I tried everything to evict it, therapy, yoga, crystals, meditation, sage, oat milk lattes, you name it. Each “solution” worked for about five minutes before anxiety showed up again, waving like, “Hey, did you miss me?”
Eventually, I realised no one was coming to save me from it. Not my doctor, not my meditation app, not even the algorithm that promised me “Three Easy Ways to Calm Down Instantly!” I had to become my own expert, my own healer, my own slightly frazzled spiritual scientist. So, I stopped outsourcing solutions and decided to decode anxiety myself. Spoiler: once I stopped treating anxiety like an enemy and started seeing it as a messenger, everything changed.
The Day I Realised Anxiety Wasn’t Bad
Anxiety, I discovered, isn’t a malfunction. It’s an alert system, what I lovingly call the spidey sense, that pings when something in your environment or energy field shifts. Think of it like your body’s built in wifi detector, except, instead of finding networks, it picks up vibes. Your heart races, your palms sweat, your brain starts auditioning for a worst-case-scenario drama series, and you think something’s wrong with you. But really, that’s your intuitive radar saying, Something’s different. Pay attention.
The problem is that most of us never learned how to interpret that signal. We feel the ping and automatically assume danger. I used to spiral at every alert, what if I mess up? What if they don’t like me? What if my dog develops an existential crisis? Until I realised the signal itself was neutral. It was myresponsethat decided whether it turned into excitement or anxiety. Once I learned that, I stopped trying to shut anxiety off and started listening to what it wanted to tell me. That’s when everything started to change.
When You Can’t Breathe, Check Your Bandwidth
At my lowest point, I was the human version of a browser with 47 tabs open. Every emotion, every person’s energy, every world event was downloading straight into my nervous system. That’s what I call the Oversaturated Sponge Syndrome. Take a moment right now to imagine a sponge in your kitchen sink. You fill that sponge up with water to the point where it simply can’t hold anymore. In fact, one more drop creates a cascade of water flowing out… if you haven’t realised, you are the sponge in this example and the water is the chaos of the world around you. We empaths and over-thinkers are basically energetic sponges in a world overflowing with information. We scroll, absorb, and react until our mental hard drives crash. Sound familiar? That constant tight-chest, racing-mind, can’t-catch-a-breath feeling isn’t you being broken, it’s you being too full. Full of the noise and chaos of life. We don’t realise it at the time, but we are picking up on everything all around us, and if we don’t stop to slow down or release it, it will accumulate into a constant feeling of restlessness.
The fix wasn’t a new app or a guru, it was a detox. I had to wring out my metaphorical sponge. For me, that meant boundaries, decluttering (physical and emotional), along with unapologetic alone time. The more I drained what wasn’t mine, the lighter I felt. You can’t heal anxiety if you’re drowning in everyone else’s energy. Sometimes peace starts with mute notifications, on your phone and in your relationships.
One of the rules I put into place that really helped me balance was creating, over consuming. I realised that all I do throughout the day is consume. Whether it’s the news, caffeine, endless scrolling or a whole bag of chips, I was always on the hunt for that next quick fix. My nervous system wasn’t anxious for no reason, it was just asking for silence. By bringing awareness to my overconsumption habits, I began outputting just as much as I input. That looks like writing, stretching, calling a friend, taking a bath or just staring into space for a bit. If anxiety is an energy overload, slowing down and installing boundaries is a good solution. Lower your external stimulation by cleaning up your room, your phone apps, your desktop folders and even your contact list, you’ll thank me later.
Healing the Past to Calm the Present
Most of my chronic anxiety wasn’t about the now, it was about unfinished business. Old emotions I’d stuffed in the closet, hoping they’d disappear never truly went away. If every day a new phone alarm goes off and we simply ignore it, eventually it’ll feel like we have 500 screaming alarms all needing our attention. This is how past unhealed trauma accumulates into persistent anxiety. Every ignored feeling becomes another open browser tab slowing your system down. I learned to sit with discomfort instead of running from it. Sometimes that looked like journaling, sometimes ugly crying in my car, sometimes writing “Dear Universe, what the actual hell?” letters I never sent. And when I really wanted closure, I wrote cord-cutting letters, a technique from my book where you release old energetic attachments by writing, feeling, and then (safely) burning the pages. Dramatic? Maybe. Effective? Absolutely. Because peace isn’t found in ignoring the past, it’s found in finally turning toward it and saying, “I see you, I hear you, you are now safe to heal”.
Reprogramming My Brain (One Weird Trick That Actually Worked)
For years, I reacted to every anxious thought like it was a five-alarm fire. My brain yelled, “We’re not safe!” and I believed it, but didn’t know how to heal it. Then I discovered something revolutionary: I could retrain my brain to chill.
That’s where my ReNU method came from: Recognise, Neutralise, Utilise.
Recognise: Notice when anxiety shows up. Label it out loud: “Oh, that’s just my spidey sense saying hi.”
Neutralise: Breathe, remind yourself you’re safe, while you observe the thought or fear objectively.
Utilise: Once you’re calm, ask, “What is this trying to show me?” Maybe it’s a boundary you need, or a new direction calling you.
In today’s world, we never actually take the time to slow down and feel, especially when that feeling makes you unbearably uncomfortable. By simply slowing down, recognising when you are feeling unsettled and then observing that feeling, the emotional, cognitive and behavioural response diminishes dramatically. Once the negative reaction no longer exists, we can then ask important questions in order to gain access to important information. When you stop fighting anxiety and start decoding it, it transforms from a bully into a guide.
My Anxiety Didn’t Disappear: It Evolved
Do I still get anxious? Absolutely. It just doesn’t show up as a problem anymore. Anxiety is my intuition dressed in a drama queen costume. It’s the universe’s way of getting my attention when I’m out of alignment. And honestly, it’s kind of a superpower. It’s the reason I’m self-aware, empathetic, and endlessly curious about what makes us tick. Anxiety didn’t destroy me, it redirected me.
So if no one else has been able to solve your anxiety, maybe that’s the point. Maybe youwere meant to. Because when you finally stop outsourcing your healing and start listening to yourself, you realise something radical: You were never broken. You were just awakening.
From the moment you walk into Nobu Hotel Portman Square, you feel like you’ve stepped into a quiet sanctuary in the middle of all the city’s hustle. It’s not just a hotel, it’s that rare place where sophisticated design meets a real sense of calm and focus on wellness, making it easy to switch off and simply be. The hotel manages to strike a perfect balance between style, comfort, and wellbeing. Whether you’re in town for work, a luxury get-away, or just a moment to breathe, Nobu is that soulful choice that you’ll want to return to again and again.
The aesthetic immediately feels welcoming and soothing – think clean, soft Scandinavian-Japanese lines with warm natural materials and muted tones that soothe the eyes and calm the mind. It’s a subtle luxury that doesn’t shout, but whispers: “You deserve this moment.” The rooms are another highlight; thoughtful, uncluttered, and designed for rest. Crisp white linens, spa-inspired bathrooms with monsoon showers, and those little details like artisanal toiletries and a Nespresso machine that feel like tiny luxuries made just for you. The stunning interiors make each room feel like a calm cocoon where you can truly switch off.
Dining at its Best
And of course, Nobu’s legendary restaurant is the heartbeat of the whole experience. The menu reads like a love letter to Japan and South America – delicate, bright, and full of surprising twists. Their black cod miso (which is a must-order) melts on your tongue, while the delectable nigiri and sushi selection add a refreshing touch to the meal. Every dish feels meticulously crafted, a perfect balance of elegance and ease, and it’s impossible not to get very excited about the food here. Since it’s almost too hard to choose between the sushi, meat, and delectable fish dishes, a suggestion is to get the set menu with all the Nobu favourites. It also includes one of the best desserts in town – the Chocolate Bento Box, with a heavenly chocolate fondant and matcha ice cream.
Nobu’s WellnessOfferings
And then there’s the amazing Pilates studio; a bright, serene space, where the light wood floors and expansive mirrors create an inviting vibe. The studio beckons you to reconnect with your body, and whether you’re a Pilates pro or a curious beginner, the classes developed by renowned Pilates guru Marsha Lindsay are incredible. Enjoy fun and dynamic group classes and private sessions. Try the Power classes for a high-energy class with the jumpboard for choreography, endurance, and strength, the Precision class to target specific muscle groups, and Pure to combine all equipments, such as the chair, reformer and tower, inspired by the classical Joseph Pilates method. For private group- or one-on-one sessions, book the Prescribe class. What if one mineral held the power to transform your sleep, steady your nerves and accelerate recovery? For many, magnesium delivers exactly that. Involved in more than 300 processes in the body, from hormone balance to energy production and nervous system support, it’s a nutrient we can’t function without. Yet according to the World Health Organization, as many as 80% of us are falling short.
For years, I wore the badge of being a “good sleeper,” rarely clocking less than nine hours. But this year, my once-reliable rhythm unravelled. Nights became restless, mornings sluggish and energy elusive, until a nutritionist suggested magnesium. Within days, the shift was noticeable. Sleep felt deeper, muscle tension melted away and I began waking feeling genuinely restored.
Could a deficiency have been behind my fatigue all along? And is topping up with magnesium really as simple as it seems? I spoke to two nutritionists to separate science from wishful thinking.
What is magnesium and what role does it play within the body?
Magnesium is often described as a “magic mineral”, and with good reason. Involved in more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body, it underpins everything from energy production and blood sugar balance to muscle function, nervous system regulation and hormone health. “It really is one of those minerals that touches almost every area of our wellbeing,” says nutritionist Maz Packham. “For women especially, it plays a key role in easing menstrual cramps, supporting mood and promoting more restful sleep,” adds Jess Shand, naturopathic nutritionist and author of The Hormone Balance Handbook.
Why do some people notice benefits almost immediately?
When I first started supplementing with The Nue Co Magnesium Gut Barrier+, a powder combining three forms (bisglycinate, citrate and taurinate), the shift felt almost instant. Stirred into water and taken half an hour before bed, it became a simple nightly ritual. Within days my sleep deepened, my body relaxed and I woke feeling noticeably calmer.
“That’s not unusual,” explains Jess. “If you’ve been running on empty, the body tends to soak magnesium up and respond quickly. It’s like giving it exactly what it was asking for.” Maz agrees but points out that results vary. “If someone is already deficient, they might feel the difference within hours, while for others it can take more time. The form and dose make a big difference too.”
How does magnesium support sleep and relaxation?
Dubbed “nature’s tranquilliser,” magnesium works on several fronts. By activating the parasympathetic nervous system (aka the body’s ‘rest and digest’ mode), it helps switch us into a calmer state. It also supports the neurotransmitter GABA, known for its anti-anxiety effects, while reducing cortisol and relaxing muscles, all of which can interfere with restorative sleep.
“This is why supplementation is often linked to fewer night-time wakeups and deeper, more consistent rest,” says Maz. Jess adds that women often find it particularly effective in the luteal phase before their period, during perimenopause or in times of heightened stress. For me, the most striking shift was that I wasn’t just falling asleep faster, I was staying asleep, something I hadn’t managed through sleep hygiene hacks alone.
Which types of magnesium are best for sleep, digestion or brain health?
Not all forms of magnesium are created equal, and the type you choose makes a real difference. Both experts highlight magnesium bisglycinate as the best option for sleep, anxiety and hormonal balance thanks to its gentle, gut-friendly profile. For digestion, magnesium citrate can be helpful for easing constipation, though it does carry a mild laxative effect.
When it comes to cognitive function and mood, magnesium threonate stands out for its ability to cross the blood–brain barrier, while magnesium malate is often used to support energy production and ease muscle fatigue. “For broader benefits, blends can be a smart choice,” says Maz, pointing to formulations that combine glycinate, threonate and marine magnesium for optimal absorption.
Can you get enough from food, or do most of us need a supplement?
Magnesium-rich foods include leafy greens, nuts, seeds, avocado and dark chocolate, but modern living often makes it hard to reach optimal levels through diet alone. “Soil depletion, intensive farming, caffeine, alcohol, stress and even medications can all reduce our stores,” notes Jess. While a food-first approach is always best, both experts agree supplementation can bridge the gap. “For many people, a high-quality supplement is what makes the real difference,” says Maz.
Is magnesium suitable for everyone?
With magnesium supplements trending on social media, there’s been chatter about whether they’re right for all. Some TikTok videos warn against taking magnesium if you struggle with gut issues, and there’s truth to the nuance.
“Magnesium citrate, for instance, is bound to citric acid, which draws water into the bowel and stimulates a movement,” explains Maz. “That’s beneficial if constipation is the problem, but for someone without it, it may irritate the gut and cause loose stools.” She adds that magnesium oxide can have similar drawbacks, being poorly absorbed and often leading to cramping or bloating.
That doesn’t mean magnesium should be avoided altogether, but rather that the form matters. “Magnesium bisglycinate is generally the best tolerated,” Maz says. “It’s gentle, well absorbed and far less likely to cause digestive upset. This is where expert advice really pays off – choosing the right form for your specific health goals is key.”
What are the signs you might be low in magnesium?
Because magnesium is involved in so many functions, the symptoms of deficiency can be varied and easy to overlook. Fatigue, brain fog and restless sleep are common early signs, while anxiety, low mood and frequent headaches can also signal low levels. Both experts note that muscle cramps, twitching or restless legs, constipation, and worsening PMS symptoms are also worth paying attention to. Looking back, I realised I was ticking more of these boxes than I’d admitted – restless nights, post-exercise aches, even that underlying feeling of being “wired but tired.”
What about topical magnesium?
“An Epsom salt bath is a blissful wind-down ritual that helps relax tense muscles,” says Jess. Sprays and oils can also provide targeted relief to achy areas, making them a supportive addition to an evening routine. “For systemic benefits, oral supplements are more reliable,” adds Maz, “but for relaxation and ritual, topical forms can definitely add value.”
If you’re new to magnesium, where should you start?
According to both experts, it’s best to keep it simple. “Magnesium bisglycinate, taken in the evening, is calming, gentle and well absorbed,” says Jess. Maz recommends the same, adding that timing can help maximise benefits: “Thirty minutes before bed is ideal if sleep is your main concern. Always check the label for dosage, but for most women, around 200–375mg is a sensible starting point.”
Above all, consistency matters. As Jess puts it, “your body will tell you what it’s responding well to. Listen to those cues, choose quality over fillers, and give it time.” A month in, I can say magnesium has earned its place in my nightly routine. It hasn’t solved everything (late nights still catch up with me), but it’s given me a steadiness I’d been missing. For me, it’s less about a quick fix and more about finally giving my body what it needed.

3/4 cup (75 g) finely shredded unsweetened coconut
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon pink salt
4 large eggs, room temperature (see Note)
2 tablespoons melted coconut oil, plus extra for greasing
2/3 cup (210 g) pure maple syrup
11/2 teaspoons almond extract
5 oz (142 g) coarsely chopped dark chocolate (see Note)
1/2 cup (62 g) sliced almonds, for the topping
Method
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9-inch (23-cm) nonstick springform pan and line the bottom with a parchment paper round. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together almond flour, coconut, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, breaking up any lumps. Add the eggs, coconut oil, maple syrup, and almond extract and whisk until the ingredients are well combined and the batter is smooth.
When you get to the chocolate, swap your whisk for a rubber spatula and fold the chocolate into the batter until it’s evenly distributed. Pour the batter into the springform pan and spread it toward the edges. Tap the pan on the counter to level the batter. Sprinkle the sliced almonds evenly over the top, with the goal of covering all the batter. Bake on the centre rack for 30 minutes. Cool before transferring to a serving plate.
