Travelling with your mum – it might be something that has never crossed your mind. As an adult you can choose your own travel destinations and plan trips that you want to go on. You no longer have to go along with the family holiday choice. So why would you want to holiday with your mum? A mother-daughter or mother-son holiday doesn’t have to be to try and bond in a foreign country or build a stronger relationship. There are plenty of great reasons why a trip with your mum could turn out to be one of your best. Here are some of our top tips for planning a trip with your mum.
Don’t overwhelm them
If your mum isn’t used to globetrotting then take her through things slowly. Don’t just turn up on the day of departure and assume your mum will have everything under control. Have a chat about travel insurance and what to pack for the weather together.
Plan the trip together
Decide where you want to go together; it should be a destination that you both want to visit and will suit both of your travel styles. If one of you fancies a bit of culture but the other would rather chill on the beach then somewhere like Barcelona could be the perfect compromise. Planning the trip together means that you both get a say in where you go and what activities you can do while you are away.
Work out budgets beforehand
Are you treating your mum to the trip or are you both paying for things equally. Just because it’s your mum doesn’t mean you should revert to childhood and let her pay for everything. Why not have a holiday fund and spending money that you both contribute to and then use to pay for meals and activities while you are away.
Plan some downtime
When planning your trip make sure you include some time to relax and recharge. Schedule some time to do nothing, read a book or just enjoy a café with your mum and catch up. It can be easy to get caught up with fitting as much into a trip as possible, especially if it is a city break.
Try not to get too caught up in the little things that may crop up during your trip, your mum might find it hard to relax out of her ‘mum’ role. Just try and enjoy each other’s company as two adults.
