The 3 Ingredients Every Summer Smoothie Needs During a Heatwave, According to a Nutritionist

When the temperatures climb, most of us instinctively reach for an iced coffee, another glass of water or something cold to cool us down. But while staying hydrated is essential, hot weather also increases our need for key nutrients that are lost through sweating, including important electrolytes and minerals that help support energy, muscle function and fluid balance.

One of the easiest ways to replenish both fluids and nutrients is with a nourishing smoothie. With the right ingredients, your morning blend can do far more than simply keep you cool, it can help support hydration, restore essential minerals and keep you feeling energised throughout the day. According to Nutritionist, Kate Cook, just a handful of simple additions can significantly boost the nutritional value of your smoothie during warmer weather. Here, she shares the three ingredients she recommends adding to every summer smoothie to help your body cope with the heat.

1. Cacao powder, to help replenish magnesium

“When the weather is hot, we naturally think about drinking more, but it’s easy to overlook the nutrients we’re losing through increased sweating. A smoothie is a great opportunity to replace some of those while also making hydration more enjoyable,” says Kate.

“One ingredient I always recommend adding is unsweetened cacao powder. It’s naturally rich in magnesium, which contributes to electrolyte balance, normal muscle function and energy metabolism. While it’s not a replacement for electrolyte drinks if you’ve been exercising heavily, it’s an easy way to boost the nutritional value of an everyday smoothie during warmer weather.”

“Cacao also provides plant compounds called polyphenols, which have antioxidant properties. I always encourage people to think about adding colour and variety to their smoothies, and cacao works brilliantly alongside berries, cherries or banana to increase the diversity of beneficial plant compounds you’re getting in one glass.”

“My advice is to choose a pure cacao powder, like Food Thoughts 100% Organic Cacao (RRP from £4.15, Available from AmazonSainsbury’sWaitrose) rather than sweetened chocolate powders. You get a much richer chocolate flavour, without the added sugars, and it pairs beautifully with Greek yoghurt, frozen berries and coconut water for a balanced summer smoothie.”

2. Coconut water, for electrolyte replacement

“When we’re sweating more in hot weather, we’re losing electrolytes as well as fluids. While water is essential, it doesn’t replace everything your body loses, which is why some people can still feel tired or sluggish despite drinking plenty throughout the day. Coconut water is a great smoothie base because it naturally contains electrolytes like potassium, along with small amounts of sodium and magnesium, helping to replenish some of what’s lost through sweating.”

“I always suggest choosing 100% coconut water rather than sweetened varieties and blending it with frozen fruit instead of ice. You’ll create a smoothie that’s naturally refreshing, while also providing vitamins, minerals and fluid in one simple meal. It’s a small swap that can make a real difference during a heatwave.”

3. Chia seeds, for internal hydration

“Chia seeds might be tiny, but they’re one of the most effective ingredients you can add to a summer smoothie. They absorb many times their weight in liquid and form a gel thanks to their soluble fibre. This slows the movement of fluid through the digestive tract, helping your body retain hydration for longer rather than losing it quickly.”

“They also bring so much more than hydration. Chia seeds provide fibre, plant-based omega-3 fats and important minerals, so they instantly make a smoothie more balanced and nourishing. During a heatwave, when many people don’t feel like eating large meals, that’s especially helpful because you can still pack plenty of nutrition into something that’s light, cooling and easy to drink.”

“If you’re not keen on the texture, don’t let that put you off. Soaking the seeds in milk, yoghurt or even coconut water for 10 to 15 minutes before blending creates a much smoother consistency while still giving you all of the nutritional benefits.”
