Old School, Still Cool: The Classic Skincare Products That Never Go Out Of Style

Before retinol became a household word and serums had twelve steps, there were these. The skincare products that built their reputations through word of mouth, without a launch event or a viral moment and have been earning their place in bathroom cabinets ever since. Think about the products currently sitting on your bathroom shelf. Chances are, at least one of them has been there longer than you can remember and at least one of them started out on someone else’s shelf entirely. That lived in your mother’s handbag, on your grandmother’s dressing table. The one that smells like a specific memory. These are the skincare products that have earned trust across decades. Some were revolutionary when they launched. Some were simply so well made that nothing has ever overtaken them. All of them deserve a permanent place on your shelf.

The Moisturisers

Since 1930

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream

Created in 1930 by Elizabeth Arden to soothe her thoroughbred horses, then adopted by every makeup artist, royal and style icon on the planet, Eight Hour Cream is perhaps the most versatile skincare product ever made. The name came from a devoted client who used it on her child’s grazed knee and reported it healed in eight hours. Over ninety years later it is used as a lip balm, brow tamer, cuticle treatment, dry patch remedy, highlighter and overnight mask, often all at once. Princess Diana kept one in her handbag. Prince Harry wrote about it healing frostbite. A tube sells every thirty seconds worldwide. There are products that do one thing brilliantly. Eight Hour Cream does everything brilliantly. It remains in a category entirely of its own.

Since 1968

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion

Launched in 1968 in partnership with New York dermatologist Dr Norman Orentreich, the DDML, in its instantly recognisable yellow bottle was one of the first moisturisers to take a genuinely dermatological approach to hydration, focusing on strengthening the skin barrier rather than simply sitting on top of it. A bottle sells every 3.6 seconds worldwide. For many women, it was their first proper moisturiser. It is fragrance-free, allergy-tested, and gentle enough for sensitive skin. There are women in their seventies who have used it every day of their adult lives and whose skin, frankly, proves the point. Some products are a rite of passage. This is one of them.

Since 1956

La Mer Crème de la Mer

Aerospace physicist Dr Max Huber suffered severe burns in a laboratory explosion in the 1950s and spent the next twelve years and over 6,000 experiments trying to heal his own skin. He found the answer in giant sea kelp harvested from the California coastline, developing a fermentation process that produced their Miracle Broth. He played specific sound recordings to the fermenting liquid and exposed it to pulsed light during production. Both processes continue to this day. After his death in 1991, Estée Lauder acquired the brand and attempted to streamline the recipe. The broth was less effective. They went back to his notes, step by step. Today, La Mer generates over a billion dollars annually. The kelp is still hand-harvested. Each jar is still hand-filled. And every batch still contains some of the original. There is nothing else quite like it in skincare, in formula or in story.

Since 1911

Nivea Crème

The blue tin. Iconic. Launched in Germany in 1911 and a global staple by the 1950s, Nivea Crème is one of the most recognisable skincare products in the world and one of the most effective. Face cream, hand cream, body moisturiser, cuticle treatment, overnight mask,  it has been all of these things to all of these people for over a century. The formula, rich and occlusive, has barely changed. It costs almost nothing. There are women who will tell you their skin has never looked better than in the years they used nothing but the blue tin. Sometimes the simplest answer really is the right one.

The Serums & Treatments

Since 1982

Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair

Before Advanced Night Repair, there was no such thing as a serum in any meaningful skincare sense. When it launched in 1982, it invented the category and simultaneously introduced a revolutionary idea: that skin repairs itself while you sleep, and that this process could be supported. The little brown bottle has been reformulated at intervals,  incorporating advances in chronobiology, DNA repair and environmental stress research, but its core positioning has never wavered. It suits every age, every skin type and every stage of life. Ask any woman who has used it what it does and she will likely pause, because the honest answer is: a bit of everything. More glow, more resilience, more of whatever your skin was lacking.

Since 1985

Clarins Double Serum

Five years of research. Twenty-two plant extracts. One double-phase formula that delivers oil and water-soluble actives separately, blended at the point of application. When it launched in 1985 this was radical. Decades later, one sells every three seconds globally and it has won over 450 beauty awards. Boots reported a 91% increase in searches for it in a recent twelve-month period, not from a launch, not from a viral moment, simply from women talking to each other. The formula has been updated eight times, which is exactly the right approach: evolution rather than revolution. The product gets better. The concept never needs to change.

The Glow Givers

Since 1980

Clarins Beauty Flash Balm

Known in the beauty industry as “Cinderella in a tube,” Clarins Beauty Flash Balm has been delivering instant radiance to tired, dull and overworked skin since 1980. It functions as a primer, a day treatment, a ten-minute mask and a body highlighter sometimes all in the same week. The formula has been updated since launch, most recently in 2022 with 96% naturally-sourced ingredients, but the core effect of tighter, brighter, more awake skin from the very first application has never changed. In a world of overnight miracles and twelve-week programmes, Beauty Flash delivers in minutes. Which is, honestly, what most of us actually need.

The Cleansers

Since 2013

Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm

The most recent product on this list, but one that has already achieved the kind of status that takes most products decades to earn. Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm launched in 2013 after going through 52 formulations,  a process that took years and produced a texture so unlike anything else in the category that it immediately redefined what a cleanser could feel like. It transforms from balm to oil to milk on contact with water, removing every trace of makeup and pollution while leaving skin measurably softer and more hydrated. One balm sells every thirteen seconds worldwide. Described by Boots as “nine Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balms sold every hour,” it is now the standard by which every other balm cleanser is judged. It arrived less than fifteen years ago and already feels like it has always been there. That is how you know it is the real thing.

The Eye Heroes

Since 1975

Lancôme Bi-Facil Eye Makeup Remover

The product that invented the bi-phase makeup remover category and has never been bettered. Oil to loosen, water to cleanse, shake to activate, the Bi-Facil formula is deceptively simple and completely foolproof. It is gentle enough for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers, effective on the most stubborn waterproof mascara, and leaves the eye area feeling refreshed rather than stripped. Makeup artists carry it in every kit. There are women who have used nothing else to remove their eye makeup for twenty-five years. In a category crowded with formats and innovations, the original remains the one everyone eventually comes back to.
