Our Water Week is all about educating and inspiring you to drink more water and help you discover just how essential it is for your overall wellbeing. If you’re not the best at keeping on top of your 8 cups a day (maybe you find it boring or you’re just forgetful!), then here are some other ways you can get the most out of your water intake to make staying hydrated more enjoyable.

Swap your coffee for herbal tea
Increasing your tea intake is a refreshing way to get the h2o you need and a great source of anti-oxidants too! Find a tea which is tasty but not too intense so you can sip it all day long! We love homemade ginger, lemon and honey tea for a zingy way to start the morning and a mint tea (Pukka Three Mint is our favourite) for after meals to soothe our tummies.

Did you know it takes 5 glasses of water to rehydrate you after just 1 cup of coffee? Add to your water challenge and substitute your morning coffee for a caffeine-free tea. By weening yourself off that beloved morning coffee, you could boost your hydration 5 times over!

Boost your hydration with water-rich foods
It’s worth knowing which fruit and veg have a high water content so you can rehydrate your body through food – YUM. We love that so many superfoods are also water-rich. Sneak some cucumber (96% water) into your lunchtime salad or snack on some blueberries (85%) to add water to your diet without even noticing!

We also recommend eating some water-filled fruit and veg straight after your workout. Enjoying some watermelon or raspberries can actually hydrate you quicker than a glass of water. Water-rich produce also contains natural sugars, amino acids, mineral salts and vitamins that are lost through sweat. Studies show that natural foods with high water content and all these nutrients can hydrate you more efficiently than water, and even sports drinks.

Here’s more deliciously water-rich fruit and veg to enjoy:

  • Cucumber 96%
  • Lettuce 94%
  • Watermelon 92%
  • Spinach 92%
  • Raspberries 87%
  • Cranberries 87%
  • Pineapple 87%

Rehydrate with Actiph after your workout
Alkaline water is definitely the next big trend in wellness and it’s amazing for refuelling all your electrolytes after a heavy workout. Actiph was created by Guinness World Record holder, Jamie Douglas-Hamilton, a British rower who, after navigating months of treacherous seas from Australia to Africa, discovered just how vital hydration was for physical performance. With regular water flushing out his essential electrolytes, he resorted to mixing seawater with his supply of drinking water to maintain the balance in his body. Soon after, he realised there was a gap in the market for water that provided an even more efficient way to rehydrate. After months of research, he stumbled across alkaline ironised water that was proven to replace lost nutrients from intense exercise and sweating. With benefits like more energy and better recovery times, it’s a no brainer for fitness lovers looking to get the most out of their workouts.

Start the day with lemon and water
That’s right, give your water a lemon-y hit… especially in the morning. Drinking a glass of lemon-juicy water should be the first thing you do when you wake up. Not only is it more enjoyable to drink than plain water, but it’s a good way to get into the hydrating mind-set with extra health benefits, too! Lemon juice’s atomic structure is similar to the digestive fluids in the stomach. It kicks the liver into action, flushes out toxins and gets your metabolism moving. Lemon juice also helps you absorb nutrients which can help with bloating, but also is good for a healthy urinary tract, not to mention it is chocka-block with vitamin C to help your immune system!

Infuse your water for added nutrients
The warm August weather is making us dream of summer’s evening cocktails – well, fruit-infused water mocktails. You can add a whole range of different fruits to your water to create a simple, healthy cocktail. And the best thing? You can throw that 4 o’clock cocktail rule out the window and drink it all day long! We love infusing our water with lots of berries but for the ultimate refresher, try this Mojito water-infusion recipe by Sugar and Soul.
