Hands up if you’ve been dreaming about your Summer holiday plans! We have! There isn’t anything better than dipping your toes in the sea and whipping out that bikini you bought on sale last season that you’ve been dying to where! While holidays are, for the most part, something to help get you through your week and something to look forward to, they can be a teeny bit stressful at times and can throw rather unhealthy situations your way. So we’ve got the ultimate guide for some healthy holiday upgrades that you can apply to whatever exciting trip you might be planning!

Summer Festival
The festival vibe doesn’t exactly scream ‘healthy living’. It’s a time to let your hair down surrounded by your favourite artists and a damn good group of friends. But if being healthy is your jam (or: an important aspect of your life) too, it’s worth thinking ahead how you can be nourished whilst having fun.

Prepare whole foods in bulk: we’re talking dried fruit, nuts and oats. Get hold of some mason jars or reusable cotton bags and fill them with foods like almonds, cashews, goji berries and coconut chips. Home-made trail mix is a good place to start as its super yummy but also filled with a range of essential nutrients. It’s also important to fuel yourself if the morning – if you start with a healthy breakfast, you’ll set yourself up for a healthy mind-set and be reassured that you’ve got a good variety of nutrients in your body! Pack some home-made granola in an air-tight sandwich bag and it might be worth investing in a good cool box to store some cartons of almond milk!

Check out the food stands: just so you know what you’re working with. If you’ve scouted some yummy stands that sell healthy food, you can organise your meals and snacks accordingly and make the most out of what’s on offer. Always keep an eye out for some fresh coconut stands to help with rehydration!

Talking about snacks… we love to make bliss balls out of Nākd bars. Select a couple of your fave flavours and roll them together. Delicious, full of goodness and they last for days! The different flavours help to mix it up a bit, too. Nākd’s Protein Crunch Bars are also a handy, energy-sustaining snack to have in your bag – all that dancing and walking around will definitely wear you out!

Hydration: hot weather along with any alcohol consumed can lead to some serious dehydration. A helpful tip: you don’t realise you’re lacking in water until you’re already 2% dehydrated, which is why it’s really important to keep sippin’ water all day long. A good way to regulate your water intake is to have a 2:1 water: alcohol ratio. So every time you have a well-deserved G&T, drink two glasses of water. That way, you’ll skip the hangover and be bright-eyed for your sunrise yoga sesh.

Keep it clean: cleanliness is so important – not just for health reasons, but if you feel fresh, you’ll find it easier to uphold your healthy lifestyle. Bathing Under the Sky feature at most festivals in the UK. Their pop-up spa is a must if you’re feeling like a pamper, or even just a good ol’ shower. Check where they are this summer here!

Holiday with Kids
The ideal family holiday would consist of BBQ’s on the beach, Cornish ice-cream cones and homemade picnics with all the family. But most parents will probably be dreading the long travelling and endless “Are we nearly there yet?” comments from their impatient, screaming darlings. But what if we told you there was a way to live the family holiday dream, and keep your offspring content AND healthy too?

BBQ’s: swap a beef burger for a veggie one or some grilled salmon or chicken. Staying away from red meats is not only good for the environment, but is also strengthens your blood vessels. For an easy chicken dish, marinade chicken breasts in lemon juice, olive oil and mixed herbs. Alternatively, stuff salmon with thyme, rosemary, garlic cloves, dried chilli flakes, lemon and olive oil – flavoursome and healthy! Add some veggie side dishes and salads for some extra goodness!

Have a healthy picnic: our favourite way to eat al-fresco is on a picnic rug with some of our favourite sandwiches and treats. But a picnic filled with wholesome treats can honestly be just as tasty, if not more! Instead of processed white bread, use a fresh rye or sourdough loaf to satisfy your need for sandwiches. Sweet potato is also a great one for picnics as it is delicious when cold and teamed with a yummy lentil salad!

Travelling: The dreaded car journeys are something every parent will have to go through. They might not be easy or fun but the end destination is what it’s all about! To help keep your kiddos happy, we’d recommended stocking up on some un-processed snacks that are ready on standby for when they are getting hungry and a little antsy. Nākd’s Nibbles and Infused Raisins are the perfect solution and will not only delight your children’s taste buds but also keep you happy knowing they aren’t eating total rubbish!

Healthy ice-cream: when we think of summer we all imagine our kids with ice-cream on their cheeks, fingers and probably t-shirt, too. Memories like these are not ones to forget about, so have a go at making ‘nice-cream’ instead. Add chopped frozen banana to a blender with a dash of plant-based milk to make some banana ice-cream. It’s healthy, guilt-free and a delicious way to enjoy those beach days. If your children are chocolate lovers, add some cacao powder and nibs for a chocolatey treat that tastes naughty! For the ice-cream cone, try this recipe by The Gracious Pantry:

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 large egg white
  • 1/8 tsp sea salt
  • 1/3 cup coconut sugar
  • ½ whole wheat pastry flour
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil (liquid)

  1. In a bowl, combine the egg, egg white and salt – whisk lightly.
  2. Whisk/ blend in the sugar.
  3. Add the flour and mix well, get rid of lumps.
  4. Slowly whisk in coconut oil
  5. Spread 3 tbsp on an oiled waffle cone iron.
  6. Take off the iron when cooked and roll the waffle up with the cone form.

Romantic getaway
Romance does your body and soul good. To make the most of a holiday with your significant other, make it a healthy one!

Request flowers in your hotel room: there’s nothing that screams romance like a bunch of red roses at your dressing table. Flowers are also great for your mental health, too. Viewing flowers (especially roses!) decreases stress and improves happiness. Hopefully your romantic getaway will be stress-free and full of happy memories, but to add that extra relaxation to your hotel room, indulge in a pretty bunch of flowers.

Natural massage oils: if you’re feeling generous, why not treat your other half to a massage with one of our favourite massage products. This Neom Intensive Skin Treatment Candle is perfect for a couple’s massage. Burn the candle and let the oil cool slightly before using it for a deliciously scented, de-stressing massage.

Foodie heaven: everyone knows the way to a man’s heart is through food, so add some wholefoods to your heavenly holiday. After a morning hike or some afternoon swimming, munch on some Nākd Posh Bits – yummy, nutritional and oh so classy. Our favourite flavour is Cocoa Mandarin – nutty AND chocolatey!

Mocktails: sippin’ 4pm cocktails while getting your last few hours of sunbathing in – the dream. Hold off alcohol for a while longer by drinking a fruit-infused water mocktail instead. We love this Mojito Water recipe by Daily Burn – simply mix 5 mint leaves, lime juice from 3 lemons and plenty of water to taste. Simple, delicious AND healthy – what more could you want?

Have a night in: rather than eating out every evening, hip up the local markets for fresh produce and local fish. Cook a romantic meal together for some couple bonding and tasty, fresh food!

Stay active: couples that exercise together, stay together! Swimming is the ultimate summer holiday activity. Discover a waterfall, drift out to sea (not too far though!), or paddle out for a surf. The sound of water around you is therapeutic and you can uphold your mindfulness, even when out of your everyday routine. Going hiking or having an outdoor adventure to somewhere peaceful and quiet can also help with this. Healthy mind = happy holiday!
