Congratulations, there’s a baby on the way! A radiant and healthy mama-to-be starts with a well-pampered routine. But with all the changes happening inside you, navigating the world of skincare can feel overwhelming. Pregnancy is a time of significant change for your body, and your skin is no exception. Hormonal fluctuations can lead to various skin issues, from acne to hyperpigmentation and even increased skin dryness. To help you navigate these changes safely and effectively, here’s a breakdown of the essential do’s and don’ts of pregnancy skincare.

DON’T blast your skin with hot water

Hot showers or baths can strip your skin of its natural oils. Opt for lukewarm water and pat your skin dry instead of rubbing.

DO hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Increased blood flow during pregnancy can make your skin thirstier than usual. Opt for gentle, fragrance-free moisturisers and hydrating serums and ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, which are safe and effective hydrators.

Don’t use retinoids

Retinoids, including prescription retinoids and over-the-counter retinol, might be amazing anti-ageing ingredients, but they’re not recommended during pregnancy. They can be absorbed into the bloodstream and potentially harm your unborn baby. So until baby is born and you’ve stopped breast feeding, if you choose to do so, you can store your retinols at the back of your bathroom cabinet. 

DO load up on sunscreen

The sun’s rays can be especially harsh during pregnancy as hormonal changes can make your skin even more sensitive to the sun, leading to hyperpigmentation (dark spots) and an increased chance of burning. Be sure to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 daily, even on cloudy days. Opt for physical blockers like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which are considered safer during pregnancy.

Don’t use essential oils excessively

While some essential oils are safe, others can be harmful during pregnancy. Avoid oils like rosemary, clary sage, and jasmine, which can cause uterine contractions. Always dilute essential oils properly and use them sparingly.

DO scrub up

Gentle exfoliation is your friend. Exfoliate once or twice a week with a gentle scrub to remove dead skin cells, help prevent breakouts, and promote a healthy glow.

DON’T forget your lips

Pregnancy can cause chapped lips. Use a natural lip balm with SPF to keep them soft and protected.

DO patch test new products

Even natural ingredients can cause irritation, especially during pregnancy. Apply a small amount of any new product on your inner arm and wait 24 hours before using it on your face.

Don’t use strong acids

Salicylic acid and AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) are no-go zones during pregnancy. These potent ingredients can be absorbed into the bloodstream, making them potentially harmful. 

DO treat stretch marks early

Affecting 8 out of 10 women during their pregnancy, stretch marks are a common part of expecting. The good news is there are ways you can minimise their appearance and help them fade faster. Keeping your skin moisturised can help. Use products containing safe ingredients like shea butter and cocoa butter to maintain skin elasticity, or there are some amazing stretch mark oils available too. 

DON’T stress about blemishes

Hormonal changes can lead to breakouts during pregnancy. Resist the urge to pick or pop pimples, as this can worsen them. Consult a dermatologist for safe acne treatment options.

DON’T neglect your mental well-being
