CBD oil is the talk of the town at the moment. With many claiming it has a multitude of health benefits, we really want to know if CBD oil lives up to its hype. Since we are far from experts in this field, we thought we’d get advice from the people at OHNE, a natural and organic tampon brand that has just created a new CBD oil-containing product called Anti-Teardrops. Designed to ease period pain and PMS symptoms, these guys want to help women have a more positive experience with their period. We’ve put our CBD-related questions to the founders, Nikki Michelsen and Leah Remfry Peploe, to hopefully provide an easy guide for anyone who wants to know more.

What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (better known as CBD) is one of over a hundred cannabinoids found in the Cannabis Sativa plant.
OHNE’s Anti-Teardrops 1% CBD Oil comes from the flowers of the Hemp Cannabis Sativa plant, where the cannabinoid molecules are at their optimum. We use a full-spectrum CBD extract (no cheap CBD isolates here, thanks) which is extracted using a supercritical Co2 extraction process. This allows a wide spectrum of cannabinoids to be safely stripped from the plant, such as CBD, CBG, CBDV, THC, and others. The THC is a trace element (<0.02%) so, no, it won’t get you high. OHNE Anti-Teardrops is also 100% above-board and totally legal in the UK.

How does it work?
CBD full spectrum extracts can work by interacting with the natural endocannabinoid system in the human body. The endocannabinoid system supports pretty much every important function in our bodies, from pain and mood to things like appetite and sleep. CBD extracts can evoke cannabinoid receptors found in various systems of the human body (such as the gut, skin cells, reproductive organs, and the brain) to help promote natural balance and skin healing.  CBD has been researched to have a relaxant and analgesic effects which have been known to help relax the muscles and reduce pain. CBD is also an adaptogen, which is a term used to describe plants and herbs that are capable of supporting your adrenal system to balance your hormones and help manage your stress levels. They help speed up or slow down the release of stress hormones, depending on what your body needs at a given time.

Is our Anti-Teardrops Oil made from CBD alone?
Nope – we actually combine organic oils & essential oils with 100mg full-spectrum CBD to create our Anti-Teardrops 1% CBD Oil. We’ve included essential oils in our CBD oil because not only do they have a bunch of therapeutic & healing properties in their own right, but they are also known to work in conjunction with the CBD to help bind and enhance the overall effect it has on the cannabinoid receptors found all over the body. Our amazing partner Graces London have been working with CBD and essential oils for 6 years, testing and learning about the best combinations for the ultimate chill.

Hemp seed oil is a natural superfood for the skin, argan oil and evening primrose oil work to keep your skin healthy and hydrated, with evening primrose oil also helping to regulate and balance your hormones. Lavender oil has been known to help with every kind of pain from muscular aches to emotional anxieties, lemon oil has got your back for improved circulation, mental health, and immune system, and lemongrass oil is antiseptic, antifungal, antibacterial, and super hydrating.

Is CBD going to get you high?
No. CBD is the non-psychoactive part of the cannabis plant. So, it will not get you high. THC is the main psychoactive component of the cannabis plant and is illegal in the UK. However, our CBD is extracted from low THC 0.02% hemp cannabis plants – which means our product only contains trace elements of THC, keeping in line with UK legal requirements.

Is CBD illegal?
CBD is perfectly legal. So long as a CBD product contains no more than 15% CBD and less than 0.2% THC, it is completely legal in the UK. So if you’re looking to gain some street cred, you’ve probably come to the wrong place – all these ingredients are totally above board. OHNE LTD does not sell or distribute any products that are in violation of the United Kingdom Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. It’s important to note here that, while the drops will fit nicely in your hand luggage, it is your responsibility as the customer to ensure that you are in compliance with local legislation. This means if you’re planning to travel outside the UK with any CBD product, check it’s welcome (and not illegal) in the countries/cities you’re travelling to!

How Anti-Teardrops Oil be used?
Some people use it to soothe and nourish hormonal skin, or as an aromatherapy tool to help relieve stress and anxiety, but we’ve discovered it can be really beneficial for making your period a little bit easier. So here are just a few of the ways you can get the most out of our pro-period CBD oil…

First things first: do a patch test. This is just to make sure you won’t have any kind of allergic reaction to any of the ingredients in the product. Use a tiny drop on a small section of your skin to test for allergies. If you have a reaction, don’t use it again, especially on or near your (very sensitive) vagina (we’re stating the obvious, we know). If no reaction occurs, you’re good to go!

  • Rub a few drops directly on your skin onto your belly, right over your uterus or across your lower back, wherever your period likes to attack.
  • Another popular way to use CBD oil is as a supplement for stress or anxiety (we know for some of you those pesky PMS symptoms can get pretty rough). The best way we’ve found to do this is by popping a few droplets into our bubble baths for some aromatic relaxation. Ultimate self-care, right?
  • This one might sound unusual – but we like to apply their CBD oil directly on our (organic, obvs) tampons before inserting them.

It’s totally up to you to decide how to use your Anti-Teardrops, babe. Because cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system in the human body – and our bodies are all unique – what works for one person might not work for the next. Whatever method you decide to go for, we’d recommend starting with no more than 2-3 drops at a time and building up your use as needed and as feels good to you. Just bear in mind that you shouldn’t put the Anti-Teardrops into your morning coffee as the added essential oils don’t make for very nice drinking!

So much hype…but where’s the scientific evidence?
With the huge media attention around CBD, it’s important to know the facts. We’ve partnered with the UK’s pioneering CBD brand, Graces London, to bring you the UK’s first pro-period CBD oil which is high quality, developed by experts, and can be used as a supplement to help manage the symptoms of your monthly cycle.

We created Anti-Teardrops because we fell in love with it ourselves. Both of us have been using it to help manage our own period pains since we discovered it, while the founder of Graces London, Shiona, has even been using it to help ease the pain symptoms arising from the endometriosis she suffers from. But don’t worry, we don’t expect you to just take our word for it…

OHNE Anti-Teardrops have been thoroughly tested on members of both the Graces and OHNE community, with the results more than making up for the lack of clinical trials conducted within the scientific community. Results from studies conducted by Graces in 2017 found that users of CBD oil helped ease symptoms of endometriosis pain, sciatica, fibromyalgia, migraine and cluster headaches, anxiety, restless leg syndrome, muscular aches and pain, acne, dermatitis, arthritis, ADHD, skin burns, blisters, dry and stressed skin. More recently, Graces London conducted a study with the specific intention to measure the correlation between using CBD oil and decreased cramping, muscle aches, and tension caused associated with period pain. And we weren’t disappointed. The results showed that period pain decreased noticeably between 10-40 minutes after use of the CBD oil. We also received feedback that the use of the oil helped with breast soreness, hormonal spots, relaxation, and de-stressing.

Our promise is that we will continue to document and publish feedback on customer and community feedback, bringing the amazing (and hugely under-researched) properties of CBD into the period world. We want everyone to experience the chill period they deserve.

We hope you found this a helpful and insightful guide on all things CBD oil. We know it’s still early days with regards to research but we are certain over the next few years more developments will be made into the benefits of CBD.
