Rude Health have just launched the first ever tiger nut drink in the UK! Yes, that fuchsia carton that has just appeared on your Waitrose shelves belongs to the newest member of the mylk family! Dairy free, gluten free, nut free (confusing we know, but tiger nuts are not technically nuts, they are tubers just like potatoes and sweet potatoes), organic and with no added sugar, Rude Health’s Tiger Nut Milk is the answer to all your dairy alternative desires. It’s brimming with antioxidant and medicinal qualities from its magnesium, iron and zinc properties, and super tasty so it’s definitely worth getting your paws on!

If you thought that the avocado had been exhausted of all its uses, it’s time to think again, because Love Cocoa have just launched Europe’s first ever vegan avocado chocolate bar! Yes, you heard us right… CHOCOLATE! Combining 70% British organic dark chocolate with the nutrient rich and creamy tasting fruit in its 100% natural freeze dried pulp powder form, this one’s for you avocado-obsessing sweet tooth-ers! What’s more, just like the fruit, this chocolate is packed full of nutritional benefits so you won’t even feel so bad devouring a whole bar in one go (and we all know how easy that is to do!) Love Cocoa’s Avocado Dark Chocolate Bar is available to buy now on Love Cocoa, with more stockists to be announced shortly.

Comvita Apple Cider Vinegar Drink
We’ve had a UK first, and a Europe first, so why not squeeze in a world first?! Comvita have recently launched the world’s first ready-to-drink Apple Cider Drinking Vinegar, available in two refreshing flavours, Natural (Original) and Golden Kiwi. Made with all-natural ingredients, including Comvita’s own Mañuka Honey, reaping the nutritional benefits of apple cider vinegar has never been easier. The active compound, acetic acid, found in the Drinking Vinegar helps improve digestion and supports blood sugar balance. Sounds like a perfect post-meal drink to me… be it at home or just as easily on-the-go! Available to purchase now online at www.comvita.co.uk and at Holland & Barrett.

Madeleine Shaw’s Meditation
After a couple of months offline (and a gorgeous baby boy later!!) Madeleine Shaw is back in our lives, and she’s back with a gift for us in the form of “Meditate with Maddy”. For £9.99, Maddy provides us with “the perfect 10-minute remedy for every stressful situation”. Sound Sebastien Residency by Jasmine Hemsley & Toni Dicks at Devonshire Club
We all know how difficult it is to take time out of work to allow ourselves to relax, to help the mind, open the heart, and nourish the spirit… but we also know how important it is! As do Jasmine Hemsely and Toni Dicks, whose mutual love for the ancient practice of sound and its ability to calm and curate good vibrations for ultimate relaxation has led to their Sound Sebastien Residency. Located at the Devonshire Club, the stylish and luxurious members club at the heart of the City, every Monday from October 23rd through to late November, you have the opportunity to experience the healing power of Sound Baths yourselves. Described as “a unique moment of time to rest your head and feel enveloped in a wave of powerful and therapeutic tones in a pristine peaceful environment”, we can’t think of a more perfect way to rest and renew during, or after a busy day (and wish our offices weren’t so far away!) 4 sessions are held every Monday – two at lunch time, two in the evening – at a very accessible price of £30/hour session (which also includes a healthy Ayurvedic meal and tea!) If we were you, we would be heading straight to their events page now to bag our place before they’re all snapped up!

Meet Juliette Thornbury – Founder Of Luminosity Crystals

New to Hip & Healthy’s wellness offering is Luminosity Crystals! To celebrate the new brand on our site, we sat down with founder, Juliette Thornbury, on why she advocates introducing the healing power of crystals into your life.

How have crystals played a role in your life?
From a very young age, I have had a growing interest in any sort of crystal or stone I could find. I come from a family of jewellers too so this definitely had an impact. As an adult, it became more than a hobby as I began researching and expanding my collection further. It eventually became such an important part of my life that I decided to turn it into an actual job that I love to do.

Was there a particular moment or event that inspired you to create Luminosity Crystals?
Luminosity Crystals was first created a little over two years ago and it was an idea based around the hope to share these beautiful pieces of nature with others all around the world. I feel like there wasn’t a particular moment that inspired me – It was more of a built-in idea that just took a little time to develop into something bigger. I am so fascinated by the thought of each stone having its own story, and I love that I can now provide others with a little treasure that will assist them on their own path.

Why and how do you incorporate crystals into your daily health and beauty routine?
I am drawn to crystals for all kinds of reasons, especially for their countless benefits to our physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. I try to incorporate them in my everyday life, even when I’m not working. I keep them all around my home, in order to remain centered and grounded throughout the day. I also like to wear them in jewellery to carry this positivity throughout my daily routine. I have started working on a range of room sprays and scents containing essential oils and crystals – These will be launched later in the year and are the perfect combination of aromatherapy and crystal healing for you and your home.

How do you pick the crystals? And where do you source them?
Our stones are sourced from all around the world. I have multiple suppliers throughout India, Nepal, China and Brazil that hand pick each and every crystal carefully for their beauty, quality and healing properties. I also source many pieces myself within Australia too – I am always passionate about stocking not only the highest quality specimens, but also the most beautiful and unique.

We will be stocking Amethyst, White Apophyllite, Raw Rose Quartz, Moonstone and Candle Quartz. Could you tell us a bit more about each crystal and how they are used to enhance wellness and healing?
This beautiful collection that you will be stocking revolves around positivity, light and wellness. Each of these lovely pieces contain their own unique healing properties.

Apophyllite is known to reduce feelings of stress, anxiety, fear and worry. Placing an Apophyllite in a room will allow it to send its spiritual energies out to anyone nearby. They are great for filling a room with high vibrations of peace and love.

Rose Quartz is a stone of the heart, a crystal of unconditional love. It carries a soft feminine energy of compassion, peace and healing. Opening the heart on all levels, it dissolves emotional wounds, fears and resentments.

Candle Quartz is a mysterious crystal with a gentle but strong energy. It is a crystal for bringing in hope and comfort where there was unhappiness or pain. Candle Quartz is also another heart stone that can open, balance and soothe the heart chakra.

Rainbow moonstone has a gentle, calming energy. It helps to strengthen intuition, enhance creativity, compassion, and inner confidence. It is a stone of protection that brings balance, harmony and hope. Moonstone is also said to bring abundance to one’s life, as well as love of all kinds.

Amethyst is one of the most powerful stones to protect and guard against negative energies. It enhances spiritual awareness and psychic consciousness while containing strong healing and cleansing powers. Amethyst is extremely beneficial to the mind, encouraging deeper understanding and focus while reducing anxiety, depression and insomnia.

Of all the crystals is there one that means the most to you? Why?
It’s always hard for me to pick a favourite, however, I have always loved natural, unpolished crystals the most – especially Clear Quartz, Amethyst & Citrine. These three are staples to any collection whether you are an expert in crystal healing or just have an interest in them. They are definitely among some of my greatest favourites as they are found in so many beautiful and unique formations. Their colours, shapes and of course positive vibes are just a few reasons I have fallen in love with them. Placing these around your home or workspace will not only help to remove any negativity from the room, but also generate a positive and grounding environment.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working on Luminosity Crystals? How do you make sure you have a healthy work-life balance?
Working from home has so many benefits, but one downside is that it can be difficult to shut off from your work. I think it’s important to spend time with family and pursue other interests that aren’t work-related. For me this can be difficult since I also live in my workspace. To ensure I have a healthy work-life balance, I make sure that on most days I stop working by 5pm and I also try to reserve the weekends for my own time, usually spent with friends and family.

7 Spiritual Lessons From Ruby Warrington

Ruby Warrington is sitting on a comfy sofa at the very back of Shoreditch House’s cosy sitting room. I am a little nervous to meet her – as a former employee of the magazine world myself, Ruby is someone I had spent a long time admiring in my early career days at Conde Nast. I loved everything she did at The Sunday Times Style – her weekly barometer, the style reports and her articles on social trends (she later tells me that, looking back, it was the trend writing that really appealed to her because “I’ve always been quite tuned into the public, well the kind of mass consciousness, you know?” There was no need for me to be nervous at all – Ruby, was not just lovely and open but she was also totally on my wavelength (a little bit hippie, a little bit hipster). After a few minutes of chatting, I was completely at ease even though still in awe of everything she has achieved. Her blog, The Numinous, clocks up hundreds of thousands of hits a month and her recent book “Material Girl, Mystical World” (Harper Collins) has a testimonial from Arianna Huffington, not to mention she can read Birth charts (she read mine – it was potentially one of the quickest ways to see things about myself that I knew but hadn’t truly accepted as part of me yet). After over an hour of chatting, here are seven lessons I learned from the spiritual goddess herself…

  1. It’s OK when your dream job isn’t your dream anymore…

“The team at Sunday Times Style was amazing – really fun and smart and Tiffany Dark is a brilliant editor, a very powerful, strong woman and became a real mentor to me. It was fast-paced, and I was writing about all the stuff I really loved. However, the pressure, the pace and the repetitiveness of working on a weekly magazine began to take its toll after a couple of years and I became bored, which manifested itself as anxiety. I was devastated when this began to happen, but it was also the beginning of something really exciting as it was at this point I started working on a side project – which would later develop into The Numinous.”

  1. Follow your passion and see where it leads

“When I got given the party pages {at Sunday Times Style} it became my job to be out at events every night, which was strange for me as I am such an introvert and I found it a little intense. I started using alcohol more and more as a way to just switch off and enjoy myself and escape from the fact that I wasn’t really happy. So, I started looking for something that would inspire me and that I loved and that’s when I turned to my passion of astrology; I’ve always loved astrology and had always been fascinated to learn more plus I wanted to know how to read a chart. That’s when I introduced myself to the well-known astrologer, Shelley von Strunckel, and asked if she’d mentor me. Although she didn’t teach me astrology, she would invite me over for dinner and we’d talk about all her mystical travels to Ashrams, study different spiritual teachers, and all the different mystical traditions that she’d experienced in her life. That’s when it hit me – it’s not just astrology, all of this is so endlessly fascinating to me. It was like being given an unlimited store card for Selfridges shoe department. It was that same amount of excitement.”

  1. Trust the process – not everything needs to happen NOW

“I put a lot of pressure on myself for The Numinous to be big right away. But I soon learned that from the beginning it was very explorative, and I would just meet people that were doing stuff that I might want to write stories about. Just very gradually, built it up until I felt like I was ready to launch it. Which was September 2013. I’d lined up some pretty small hard-hitting stories, and actually, one of the stories from that launch week ended up in Style magazine.”

  1. Build a community no matter where you are

“I have the ‘Moon Club’ and I also have ‘Club Soda’. ‘Moon Club’ launched in November last year, and for me it was a project that I’d been working on with my collaborator, Alexandra, who’s been working for the site for 3-4 years. She had really wanted to start a community, to start offering the healing, mystical work that we do, to a wider audience, who didn’t necessarily have access to it. Whether that was because of their location, or whether that was because of their financial situation, we were very aware that living in New York and L.A., we had access to incredible workshops, healers, talks and speakers, but that outside of these major cities, you might find it quite hard to find someone to share that with, and learn about it with, so we really wanted to create something for people anywhere, to access. So that was the bases for ‘Moon Club’.”

  1. It’s OK for your project to be scrappy

“I feel like I’m completely just making it up as I go along, but actually that is part of the grand plan, that’s part of this new feminine paradigm. It’s a different way of doing business, it’s more collaborative, there’s much less hierarchy involved, it’s about building and growing stuff from the ground up. So when I find myself going ‘this is so scrappy and unprofessional’…’say’s who?’ Says who? This is operating really nicely and giving me a kind of lifestyle that I really want, I don’t answer to anybody, I’ve got complete freedom over what I do. And it may be taking a bit longer… but then I’m in it for the long haul.”

  1. Living your dharma is harder than you think

“Working out your Dharma, or feeling that you’re living your Dharma is about answering three questions – who am I? What am I here to give? And what do I need to be able to do that? For me, in astrology that’s represented by our sun sign – who am I? What’s the essence of my being? Our rising sign – How do I express that in the world and what am I here to give with that? And then our moon sign – what do I need to feel nourished and supported, so that I have the strength and the energy and the confidence to actually show up and do that? Because, obviously serving, doing, walking the path of your purpose is actually so much harder than so many of us give it credit for. It’s something you see all the time, you know, ‘just be you, just be yourself’, that is actually so hard. Once you stop and think about that simple statement for just a few minutes, you realise it’s very hard to do you. Because there’s so much conditioning, and there’s so much expectation, and there’s so much to compare with, and just so much external stuff that we measure ourselves against.”

  1. Use astrology as a tool for confidence

“One of the reasons people love astrology is because people want to be seen, people just want to be seen and recognised, and astrology is a mirror for you to see yourself. What an amazing tool! Because only once you see yourself fully, know yourself fully, can you really feel confident about being seen in the world as yourself.”

How To Meal Prep Like A Pro

We all know that someone who smugly walks into work full of beans, with their lunch prepped, and their dinner prepped… and their breakfast, lunch and dinner prepped for tomorrow too! Well now it’s time to make that someone you! It will save you time, it will save you money (and it will save you from being jealous of that someone… and jealousy doesn’t look good on anyone!) With Hip and Healthy’s 6 tips to meal prepping like a pro you’ll be doing just that in no time, so read on and follow closely for maximum meal prep happiness J

Write down your meals for the week. If you write it down you’re much more likely to stick to it. You can make this a fun activity too, like searching new recipes online or going through all your cookbooks you just haven’t found the time to browse! With so many recipes available to you, you’ll plan a week full of exciting and delicious meals, so there will be no risk of getting bored of your food.

Shop according to your meal plan. Keep your cupboards stocked with a variety of ingredients that can be the base for many different meals, then top up your fresh produce twice a week. Legumes, dried beans, bulgur wheat, quinoa, brown rice, rolled oats, frozen veg and nuts are all examples of ingredients with a long shelf life that can be incorporated into so many different recipes. If you constantly have these on hand, then you can buy your fresh ingredients when you have time throughout the week without breaking the bank! Plus, there’ll be way less waste!

Use Sunday as your food prep day. It doesn’t have to take all day to meal prep, but it would be handy to get all the long stuff out of the way! So, put aside a couple of hours on a Sunday to roast your veg, cook your quinoa, and marinate your fish. What’s more you can do all this in front of your favourite TV show, or listening to your favourite podcast… what’s not to love about that?!

Make double batches when you can. As Madeleine Shaw encourages, “cook once, eat twice”. If you’re cooking in the evening, why not make double the amount so you can save a portion for your lunch the next day! Or even if you don’t want to eat the same thing two days in a row, you can freeze the extra portion for a lunch or dinner next week! Simples!

“Embrace the #TUPPLIFE”. Dr Hazel Wallace (aka. The Food Medic) advises her followers to do all the meal prepping in one day and to keep it all in Tupperware. Put Monday-Wednesday’s meals in the fridge, and the rest of the week in the freezer. Glass Tupperware is great for storing stews in the freezer and fridge, and Mason jars are perfect for your jar salads, healthy pot noodles and your overnight oats! If you’re using plastic Tupperware make sure its BPA free!

Don’t be afraid to start small. Just like if you’re starting a new class or starting at the gym, don’t be too ambitious! Even just prepping your snacks for the week, or your overnight oats for breakfast the next day is enough! Once you’re comfortable with these then you can start prepping more meals for the week. And be realistic – you’re bound to want to treat yourself to lunch or dinner out one week so don’t over-prep because you don’t want to end up with more waste!

If that doesn’t sound easy, we don’t know what does. Follow these tips to help you stay on top of eating healthy and delicious throughout week, even if you have a busy schedule! After no time you will be prepping like a pro… and everyone in the office will be asking YOU how you do it… if they do, don’t forget to pass on Hip and Healthy’s 6 steps!!!!

BEST FOR… INDIVIDUAL, TAILORED NUTRITION – SPRING GREEN LONDON

Do you lead a busy lifestyle and struggle to find time to meal prep but want to keep on top of your nutrition? Spring Green London is the brainchild of Bonnie Stowell, a Michelin-star-trained-chef who has seen first-hand the positive and transformational effects a good diet can have on you.

Spring Green London came to inception after Bonnie took it upon herself to devise her father an eating plan rich in plant-based food when he was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes. Years of working late, relying on pre-packaged and processed foods had contributed to her father’s disease and it was through her low sugar, nutrient-rich meals that Bonnie helped reduce his symptoms; normalising his sugar levels, leaving him looking younger and feeling better than ever.

Bonnie’s experience of the power of fresh, nutrient-rich, multitasking foods and this keen awareness of the power of food to shape our health has fundamentally shaped the ethos of the company. Spring Green London is not about fads or quick fixes; it’s intelligent eating for the future, the perfect antidote to busy modern lifestyles where good nutrition can sometimes be overlooked and sidelined when work and other commitments take over. Where do you we sign up?

How To Eat Comfort Food & Stay Healthy

There’s simply no denying, avoiding comfort food in winter is way trickier than in the summer months! When it’s miserable and cold outside, there’s nothing more warming and comforting than a big meal with family and friends and indulging in never-ending puddings snuggled under a blanket afterwards. Darn you change of seasons! While those sorts of habits aren’t necessarily the best for your body long term, we definitely believe you should still be able to enjoy comfort food and feed yourself with nutrients at the same time. Daylesford’s resident nutritionist and wellness expert, Rhaya Jordan, talks about how to eat for the new equinox, keep things super nutrient-dense AND classify it as comfort food!

The Autumn equinox has been and gone, the evenings are getting darker and winter coats have been donned: the seasons have well and truly changed. This is the time of year when we naturally crave foods that feel warming, indulgent and satisfying. But comfort food goes way beyond stodgy mashed potatoes and heavy puddings. It’s time to take a fresh look at what we like to think of as “deep winter foods” to ensure you feel well fed, rested and rejuvenated at this time of year.

There are so many beautiful ingredients in season at the moment. The organic Market Garden at Daylesford is harvesting plenty of pigment-rich beetroot, plums and damsons; leafy chard and radicchio; refreshing apples; crunchy fennel; sweet, silky squashes, peppery salad crops and much more. Organic venison from the pastures in Staffordshire and wild mushrooms from further afield are stunning in all sorts of autumnal recipes. A bowl of winter greens, perhaps wilted slightly in a little olive oil or butter with a kiss of garlic, topped with crunchy wet walnuts and pan-fried, savoury wild mushrooms is my idea of a heavenly recipe for October!

Before your diary is filled with a whirl of festive celebrations, pre-empt the party season by enjoying gut-friendly foods like bone broths, miso soup, mushroom broths and bright, lemongrass-infused soups – much better than waiting until January to start thinking about health and wellbeing.

It is easy to adapt summer standbys like juices and salads for the colder months; so-called “clean food” is, and should be, a different concept in winter. Be inspired by seasonal fruits and vegetables – make a warm salad of roughly chopped root vegetables roasted with a miso glaze to enhance the delicious earthy sweetness. Drizzle generously with a moreish salad dressing for a wonderful remedy and boost for the body: olive oil is rich in beneficial phenolic compounds that help your body mend. Don’t shy away from using quality fats: they will help with satiety and ensure you feel satisfied and full, and less likely to yearn for sweets or snack food.

Variety is key for gut health, so make sure your diet includes a whole rainbow of colours, textures and flavours. Cold weather food tends to be very sweet or salty, but bitter and sour flavours send messages to your liver to increase its detoxification enzymes. Fermented foods play an important role here; enjoy a side of sauerkraut or kimchi with meals to care for your gut.

Deep, vibrant pigments in foods are a good indication that they pack a nutritional punch – beetroot and blackberries are great examples of fantastic British-grown superfoods, and traditional fruits like apples and pears are wonderful to enjoy as well.

Stock up on what I like to call “slow carbs” such as pulses and beans: a great recipe idea is to braise cannellini or another small white bean with kale and a dribble of bone broth.

In many countries, this time of year is traditionally associated with hibernation. Embrace this sentiment by allowing yourself to relax with long soaks in deep, scented hot baths, restful evenings at home and even allowing yourself to sleep slightly longer to re-set your body clock in tune with the season.

Delicious Sober October Recipes You’ll Love

Have you decided to embrace sober October this year? Well done if you have, and if you haven’t… GET ON IT! Even if you’re not a massive drinker, giving up alcohol for a month is a fantastic way to detoxify the body and it will also give your liver the chance to re-set, especially before the indulgence of Christmas!

Many people often admit to drinking purely because of peer pressure and the desire to gain social acceptance. This is a totally normal thing to feel but it’s definitely not a reason to down seven shots of tequila of keep accepting rosé top-ups if you don’t really feel like it. Choosing to ditch alcohol for a certain period of time does take strength, but stand your ground and make your intentions clear and people should respect you for it. Below we’ve found six alcohol-free drinks recipes that you can whip up at your next dinner party or offer to make at someone else’s!

Cucumber Mint Fruit Cooler | Yes To Yolks

Spiced Pumpkin Seed Maple Horchata | The Bojon Gourmet

Probiotic Strawberry Soda | Fermented Food Lab

Pomegranate & Fennel Digestive Spritzer | In Sonnet’s Kitchen

Suffering From Eczema, Asthma & Allergies? Meet The Beauty Chef

We are super excited to be stocking The Beauty Chef and adding to our wellness offering online! We chatted to the founder, Carla Oates, all about how she turned her suffering of eczema and allergies as a teenager into a global brand that is helping people overcome the same hurdles.

You founded your global beauty brand, The Beauty Chef, in 2012. How did you get into organic beauty and health?
My interest in natural health and beauty began as a teenager when I suffered from eczema and allergies and went and saw a naturopath who eliminated certain foods from my diet and introduced others. I saw a profound difference in my skin. From there I understood the importance of what you put in your body for good skin health.

I was then working as a beauty editor about fifteen years ago and became concerned with the amount of toxic chemicals in skincare. I had always been interested in alternative/holistic health so I started researching the benefits of looking after your skin with clean ingredients, predominantly super active plant compounds that rejuvenate the skin from the inside, out.  I made the decision to write only about natural and organic health and beauty and delve into more researching and formulating organic products to offer women healthier options.

I had been researching the benefits of plants and natural biological processes such as lacto-fermentation for around 10 years and was writing in the area of natural health and beauty. I had published a book called Feeding Your Skin with Penguin (in 2004) and had a DIY beauty column for the Sunday Telegraph for eight years as well as being the natural beauty editor for Wellbeing Mag for 12 years (which I still am). During this time I made all my own skincare from scratch from plants and organic foods and was giving them to friends and family to use. I created quite a demand and that demand grew to friends of friends. It seemed a natural progression to create a brand.

One thing that really stood out, too, was the difference in people’s skin when they ate my lacto-fermented vegetables. People were addicted to my fermented veggies and kefir coconut water – hence why The Beauty Chef started with my lacto-fermented inner beauty superfood powder, Glow.

The Beauty Chef believes that good skin begins in your gut. Our motto is “Beauty begins in your belly”.  Natural, active skincare follows.  I have been researching and writing about the positive effects of natural and organic skincare on skin and health over the last decade and at the same time formulating products for myself and my research.

You say “beauty begins in the belly”. What do you mean by this?
If you’re working toward more radiant and glowing skin, you might be surprised to know that the answer lies more in your digestive tract rather than on how much you’re spending on creams and cleansers.

Our guts are where 70% of our immune system lies, where we make nutrients, metabolise hormones, neutralise pathogens, make detoxifying enzymes. All of these things can wreak havoc on our skin if they are not in balance. More and more research is showing the gut/skin link. For example, a lack of hydrochloric acid in the gut is implicated in skin problems such as acne and rosacea. Lactic acid bacteria (found in our fermented products) helps increase levels of this acid. Poor digestive health means that the lining of our gut becomes more permeable than it should (also called “leaky gut”), food particles can slip thru and our immune system sees those as foreign substances. This leads to an inflammatory response in the body, and one of the main effects we see is skin disturbance, such as eczema, acne, and dermatitis. When we restore healthy digestion, our skin can revitalize.

At The Beauty Chef we embrace the time-honoured art of fermentation in our products because fermenting ingredients not only pre-digests them to make the nutrients more available for the body to use, but it creates probiotics to help balance digestion.

The fermentation process and probiotics found in our Glow Powder work together to help get the digestive system back on track. Fermented foods promote better digestive health, leading to greater absorption of nutrients and improved liver. Probiotics are billions of good bacteria to keep the digestive system healthy and boost the immune system of the body and skin.

You are passionate about fermentation, both in your product formulas and in your cooking. What does fermentation involve and what are its benefits to our health and wellness?
More than twenty years of research have gone into the development of our unique bio-fermentation process called Flora Culture™ that breaks down foods, making them more available for the body to use as well as creating a natural, broadspecturm probiotic to help support gut health. Our blends are rich with carefully selected Certified Organic ingredients that nourish from the inside, so it glows on the outside.

When you ferment, nutrients are made more bio-available for the skin to use. For example, if you eat a plate of super foods, you may only actually digest 25% of the nutrients. However, if you lacto-ferment these foods, you can actually absorb up to 85%!  The beneficial bacteria break down the foods so they are easier to digest. Lacto-fermentation also creates naturally occurring probiotics that help balance the skin. We have this incredible process that turns natural ingredients into supercharged and super-active ingredients – and it is all done by nature!

What or who has played the biggest role in your health journey?
Improving my own health has been the biggest influence. Suffering from eczema, allergies and asthma as a child and teenager and seeing a naturopath who introduced me to the concept of ‘food as medicine’. My uncle was a chef and very into macrobiotics when I was a teenager – he lived in the mountains of Maleny, QLD; was the founder of brand of organic sauces and engaged a homeopath for all of his health issues. He also had a big influence on helping change the way I perceived food, health and medicine.

 The Beauty Chef

Alongside constantly developing your brand, you write for Wellbeing Magazine and you’re a mum of two! What are your tips for keeping a healthy work/life balance?
You are at your working best when you are healthy and content; so looking after your body with good nutrition and exercise is one of the most important steps to success. Giving energy to the things you love, be it your hobbies or simply sharing food with those you love, doing everything with love makes this life meaningful and worthwhile.

I believe family and friends should always come before business; it is not always easy, but striving for life/work balance (and not the other way around) is always top on my agenda. Along the way, you learn what supports you. Going for long walks is one of the most fruitful things for me to do. It fills up my energy reservoir and is like a natural filing system for my brain. I start a walk sometimes with a very busy brain and by the time I have finished my walk, I have solved the world’s problems and feel energised. It is my slow time.

Humour is also very important – and fun. Fun should be on the top of our list and should not be limited to childhood – like everything, it should get better with age! My husband is a bit like Peter Pan, so sometimes we just do silly, childish things and it really breaks up the seriousness of adulthood, which I love. I think adults sometimes forget about how important having fun is for your mind, body and soul.

The supplements are designed to take daily. How long does it take to see/feel results? And what happens if you miss a day?
Each Beauty Chef Inner Beauty Powder is formulated for different skin and health benefits, but each is designed to improve gut health and digestion, and promote healthier, glowing skin from the inside out.

It really depends on the current state of your digestive system for how long it will take to see and feel the results.  As our powders offer bio-available nutrition, your body doesn’t have to work hard to digest it, so it is like you are getting an instant infusion of nutrients into your body, which is why people talk of the incredible clean energy our products give them. If it is really out of balance, you will likely notice results straight away, but it may take a few weeks for your tummy to settle as you load it with goodness.

The feedback we get is “My skin is glowing, I can grow my nails, which I haven’t been able to before”. “My tummy feels better”, my hair grows faster”, “My skin has cleared up”. These results vary, some people notice it straight away, for others it can take a few weeks to one month. Over time and especially if you make other lifestyle changes that support good gut health, you will notice a huge difference in the way you feel, your skin and your weight.

If you have built up momentum with feeding your gut nutrient rich food and probiotics, it is ok to miss a day!

What does your morning beauty routine look like?
In the morning, I go for a run along Bondi Beach, and when I come home I drink a glass of GLOW Inner Beauty Powder in purified water – because beauty really does begin in the belly! I then enjoy a big breakfast of eggs and fermented veggies, sometimes with avocado and smoked salmon, or if I am in a hurry a BODY Inner Beauty Powder smoothie with some extra berries and almond milk. I keep my skincare routine very simple and use only natural products – I make a lot of my own skincare at home form wholefoods.

What is one product you can’t live without?
I never go anywhere without my GLOW Inner Beauty Powder. GLOW is my daily skin support and maintenance staple. It gives me a good dose of skin loving nutrients and also probiotics to nourish and boost digestive health.

You love cooking and published your own cookbook, The Beauty Chef, at the end of last year. What ingredients do you always have in your kitchen? Which is your favourite recipe from the book
Sauerkraut is my favourite thing to eat. I make a lot of it, I love it. We quite often have it with our breakfasts with eggs and avocado.

Other ingredients I always have on my kitchen are apple cider vinegar, eggs, fermented veggies, salmon, goats cheese, coconut milk, pesto, spices, fresh herbs and sprouted seed bread. RE: supplements, all of The Beauty Chef Inner Beauty products, grass fed colostrum and medicinal mushrooms.

My favourite smoothie recipe is the GET GLOWING SMOOTHIE BOWL from The Beauty Chef Cookbook. It’s super delicious and jam packed full of nutrients that feed your skin from the inside. I also love the autumn smoothie bowl (with BODY), the yum chai smoothie (with BODY), the chocolate peppermint smoothie (CLEANSE) and The GLOW, Blueberry and cinnamon smoothie is also delicious!

Supplements To Take To Avoid Winter Sickness

We all know what’s lying right ahead of us in winter: colds, the exchange of germs and infections, tiredness and a lot of Christmas pudding. There are ways to prepare for the colder months by getting our bodies ready and working at its optimum. One way this is possible is to stock up on essential winter supplements that will give you the boost you need to maintain a strong defense and boost your immunity. That’s not to say that supplements are the only way to ensure optimum vitamin levels though. Eating natural and whole foods is also vital in maintaining a strong, healthy body. Below are five key supplements to think about adding to your shopping list or worth checking for in a multivitamin!

Vitamin D
This is a no-brainer! Winter limits our exposure to sunlight and our ability to absorb vitamin D. In 2016 Public Health England said everyone should consider taking a supplement containing 10 micrograms during the winter months because it is difficult to meet this requirement through food alone. Vitamin D regulates the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body so is important for healthy bones, teeth and muscles.

Natural sources: Oats, mushrooms and egg yolks

Omega 3 Fish Oil
A great fish oil can help boost low mood during the winter months and can improve brain function. That’s because a fish oil contains two types of fatty acids; DHA and EPA.

Natural sources: Oily fish like salmon and mackerel

Vitamin A
Vitamin A boosts our immune system, fights infection and improves dry skin. Pregnant women should avoid taking too much of this as it can be toxic in large quantities.

Natural sources: Sweet potatoes, carrots, dark leafy greens, winter squash, lettuce, dried apricots and bell pepper.

Vitamin C
It is not uncommon to see everyone chugging down orange juice during the winter months and this is because oranges contain vitamin c, a great supplement for winter because it helps fight against the common cold and helps keep our body’s cells healthy and functioning at its optimum. Juice is normally high in sugar so consider taking a supplement or a multivitamin with Vitamin C.

Natural sources: Strawberries, citrus fruits, papayas, kiwis and bell peppers

Vitamin B-Complex
B Vitamins are shown to help symptoms of depression and Alzheimer’s and too much stress can impact levels in our body. Think, energy, great mood and skin!

Natural sources: fish, chicken, brown rice and oats

Going Vegetarian? 10 Ways To Make A Healthy Transition

A vegetarian diet is a healthy choice and can even lower the risk of heart disease and cancer. However, eating a balanced vegetarian diet requires adding foods that will provide you with the nutrients found in animal products, most importantly protein, iron, and Omega-3 fatty acids.

Frida Harju-Westman, in-house nutritionist at health app Lifesum (www.lifesum.com), provides 10 tips on how to be a healthy vegetarian and ensure you’re receiving all the nutrients you need.

Protein sources
Protein is essential to any diet and if you are planning to go vegetarian, then you will have to find alternatives to add to your meals. Protein is responsible for promoting cell growth and repair, and you should ideally get some protein with every meal. Some great alternatives for protein include quinoa, beans, pulses, and lentils.

Omega-3
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for heart health, but the majority of these can be found in oily fish and eggs. For a vegetarian, you should try and consume foods like almonds, walnuts and flaxseeds to get the necessary amounts of omega-3.

Get your vitamins and minerals right
Iron and zinc are important diet staples, as the first is key to red blood cells and the second is responsible for cell division. Sometimes, the problem with plant-based diets is that the body does not absorb these staples as easily as it would if they came from animal produce. Therefore, the recommended daily intake of iron for vegetarians is almost double to that of a meat-eater. To help your body absorb the metals, consume plenty of vitamin C, which speeds up your body’s absorption.

Whether you are just starting a vegetarian diet or have been following it for a little while, you probably require vitamin supplements, in particular B12, which is typically found in animal foods. A B12 deficiency can lead to side effects such as tiredness, weakness, and even depression. Make sure to eat foods that are fortified with B12, or consult a doctor before taking any supplements.

Track your needs
If you feel unsure about if your diet is daily providing you with all the nutrients and supplements you need, then downloading health apps, such as Lifesum (www.lifesum.com) or Wholesome (www.wholesomeapp.com), is worth doing.

Since over 10% of Lifesum’s users in the UK are vegetarian, compared to only 4% in Norway, the app has introduced a new vegetarian feature allowing users to select their food preference when using the app. What this means is that Lifesum can provide users with recipes to suit their lifestyle and make sure that they don’t miss any essential nutrients and lead a healthy lifestyle. If you just want to eat less meat, you can use the meat-free challenge feature where you can track how long you can go without eating meat – every time you do, just pause the challenge, and try to beat your record the next time around.

Wholesome suggests whole foods to fill nutrition gaps so you know the healthiest foods to eat next. While you cannot tell the app that you’re vegetarian, you can browse healthy and low carb recipes, are scored out of 10 points on nutrition density.

Follow health coaches
Sometimes you need a bit of motivation to keep you going, especially if you’re new to vegetarianism. Follow health coaches, nutritionists, and vegetarian chefs and get your daily dose of advice and inspiration. Some favourites include PT and blogger Faya Nilsson, from Fitness on Toast, vegan blogger Meghan Langhorn, from Naturally Meghan, and nutritionist Steph Lowe, from The Natural Nutritionist.

Replace wisely
It can be tempting to just replace meat products with processed foods such as pasta and bread, or alternatively soy meat. However, these ‘substitutes’ are often less healthy than high-quality meat, and the dangers and benefits of soy have been debated by scientists for a number of years. Make sure that you check nutrition labels and buy products low on sodium and preservatives.

Watch the sugar
Making the switch to a vegetarian diet can make it easy to overindulge on desserts and sweet treats. However, sugar actually possesses plenty of empty calories and no nutritional value. If you are craving something sweet, try adding maple-syrup or honey for extra sweetness or eating fruit for dessert.

Variety
When you find the foods that you can eat enjoy, it can be easy to fall into a routine where you just eat the same foods all the time. However, remember that the same foods might not meet your nutritional requirements, causing you to become deficient in certain minerals and vitamins over time. Make sure that your diet is as varied as possible and that you get enough protein, B12, iron, calcium, and vitamin D as a basis and work around this.

Don’t rush
If you are new to vegetarianism, make sure that you don’t rush your transition from your existing diet to your new one. Not only can it be difficult to get your head around all the things that you can, and can’t, eat but your body will also need to adjust. Start by adding more plant-based foods into your diet, while also reducing the number of animal products you eat.

Manage expectations
While a vegetarian diet can have several health benefits, it won’t guarantee that you will never fall ill or never experience health problems. The advantages of a vegetarian diet are environmental, reducing animal cruelty and your carbon footprint, with health benefits being a pleasant bonus.

Want To Feel More Body Confident? Here Are 7 Tips!

It’s safe to say we’d all like to feel 100% body confident all the time… there’s no greater feeling than really being at one with your body and appreciating (and loving) it for all its amazing talents. But unfortunately, feeling that way all the time isn’t real life. We all have days when we’d prefer to hide behind an oversized jumper or feel frustrated by the fact that we can’t find anything in our wardrobe that doesn’t make us feel like a whale. It happens! So if you’re having one of those days, one of those weeks or even one of those months, here are 7 tips from Mel Wells, author and health psychology coach, for feeling more body confident!

Wear clothes that actually fit you. Throw out all the items you have held onto that are smaller sizes for ‘one day’. When you hold onto these items in your wardrobe or try to squeeze your body into them, you will always feel uncomfortable. Change the dress to fit your body – don’t change your body to fit the dress. When you are comfortable in what you’re wearing and can breathe, you will feel more relaxed and naturally feel more confident.

Forgive yourself. You are not a problem, you are not broken, you do not need fixing. If you do desire to change your body, you must love and accept your body as it is right now first. “To get a body I love, I must start by loving the body I have.” You cannot drive a car without getting into the car first. Do not try to change your body from a place of hate and punishment, but instead, speak to it lovingly and make loving choices for your body. Instead of hating yourself thin, choose to love yourself healthy. When you are empowered by the choices you are making for your body, confidence will ooze out of you.

Be naked by yourself more often. Spend time naked by yourself, walking round the house naked, cooking naked, doing the dishes naked, ironing naked, watching TV naked. The more time you spend naked and intimate with yourself, the more your confidence will grow.

Realise that you are not your body, you are your soul. True body confidence comes from inner confidence in oneself. Instead of focusing all your attention on the mirror, realise all your qualities as a human being. Celebrate who you are as a person, rather than putting all the emphasis on your reflection in the mirror or a dress size.

Unfollow accounts on social media that make you feel like you’re not enough. Treat your newsfeed like your friends’ circle – only invite people in that lift you up and bring positivity, joy and empowerment to your life. Instead of shaming yourself by following extreme fitness models, follow people who are body positive and practice self-love.

Throw out your scale. This is absolutely key if you want to be confident in your body. For every time you use the scale to judge yourself, you are validating yourself with a piece of metal on the floor. You are so much more than a number. Celebrate your accomplishments, your big heart, what a kind soul you are. A number does not define you so don’t let it dictate your happiness.

Fundamentally – realise for yourself that happiness does not come with a number or a dress size. Losing two stone may make you more ‘socially acceptable’ on the surface level for a short while, but on a deeper level, it will not make you love yourself any more. Happiness is an inside job. When you stop chasing numbers and start practicing self-love at any size, you will find true happiness and fulfillment for life. Self-love is not a destination, but a journey and a practice. Commit to being kinder to your body. Ask yourself with every decision: “What would someone who loves themselves do?”
