What Do Your Hormones Say About You?

Nutritional therapist, Angelique Panagos, gives us the low-down on how our hormones play a huge role in our health and happiness and how you can keep them in tip top shape!

How are your hormones impacting your body and how you feel?
Is hormonal-imbalance causing you concern? You’re not alone. Hormones are delicate things that are involved in a complicated dance, watching and regulating each other’s steps and moving to the same rhythms. Once balanced, they can create a beautiful synchronised dance, that will make you feel happy and healthy! Let’s get a better understanding of their roles..

Hormones control your cravings!
Unfortunately, weight gain and keeping cravings at bay is a lot more complicated than you’d imagine and goes beyond ‘calories in vs. calories out’. It saddens me when I see clients who’ve battled every low calorie diet under the sun (and it really is a battle!) only to see the excess pounds clinging on. The truth is the effect of our hormones is stronger than calories alone as they decide what your body does with food.  For example, low estradiol (an oestrogen-based hormone) levels can have you opening the fridge more often – and usually not for anything green! Then stress and lack of sleep also throw your appetite-controlling leptin and ghrelin, i.e. ‘full’ and ‘hunger’ hormones out of whack, so you lose all sight of the stop sign and can eat everything in sight.

They can feed your insomnia.
If you find yourself lying awake in bed for hours, or feeling exhausted but can’t switch off, then hormones could be the issue! It’s time to meet your adrenals, the gland which produces the stress hormone, cortisol, to help in fight or flight situations. You see, stress equals life in acute situations! In prehistoric times, stress mostly came in the form of threats to our survival. Our bodies evolved to cope by preparing the body for immediate activity by holding on to energy from food: you either run or fight for your life. In this day and age, most of the time the stored energy isn’t used… so it stays within the body, as fat.

You might dismiss stress and think that it is a natural part of today’s busy lifestyle. And, for many of us, it’s all too easy to whip through life in constant stress mode – especially in a city like London! But the message of stress overrides other messages in the body, and this hormone imbalance can leave you too wired to sleep and in turn and foggy by day.

High cortisol levels can even raise your blood sugar, slow down your thyroid, and trigger sugar cravings. If that isn’t bad enough, it can also block the production other hormones like progesterone, lead to oestrogen dominance, and cause belly fat – say hello to the muffin top!

Hormones and that dreaded muffin top!
Speaking of muffin tops…I need to talk about the hormone insulin, which plays a vital self-regulating role, helping the body to circulate blood sugar (‘glucose’) to be used as fuel. It kicks into action once we’ve eaten and should (in theory, at least) balance our blood sugar levels. However, things don’t always run so smoothly! Too often, we’re throwing so much glucose at our insulin receptors in the form of refined sugary foods that they start giving up on us. This is when we become insulin resistant. In the end, the excess sugar swimming about in your bloodstream is stored as body fat! Furthermore, this can lead to type 2 diabetes, so it’s important to keep your insulin in check!

Hormones keep you feeling vital…or not!
Did you know women also need a healthy testosterone balance? Testosterone isn’t normally a hormone we hear a lot about when it comes to female health, but all hormones are important, and declining levels can soon see a loss of get-up-and-go, affecting everything from your sex drive to your gym motivation.

They help you go from anxious to zen
Anxiety can mean different things to each of us. It can range from restlessness, worrying, irritability, and even to having a full-blown panic attack. Regardless of which you are experiencing, it’s important to know that you are not alone.

Anxiety is a form of chronic stress, which causes the release of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. Although today were not faced with the same danger as being face to face with a hungry lion, our bodies go through the same physiological changes when we’re stressed or anxious. Over time, persistently high cortisol levels can create hormonal imbalances, increasing sugar cravings and insulin levels. By working on your stress levels, as well as controlling your response to stress and balancing your blood sugar, your hormones can help you go from anxious to zen!

But its not all doom and gloom…

Hormones make you feel loved
And feeling loved keeps us feeling alive! Oxytocin is the ‘cuddle’ or ‘love’ hormone that surges when a mother breastfeeds and whenever we hug a loved one or enjoy a little bedroom action! We need to keep our hormones in check to make sure we actually have the libido to lead to the latter!

In short it’s a balancing act
We’ve really only touched on the basics in this article. The reality is more complex as other hormones come into play. But for now, I really want you to remember the above and start to consider how hormones interact with each other. Remember not to underestimate how lifestyle factors can negatively off-set these hormonal rhythms. With stress and sleep being two of our biggest offenders, we need to relax and get good quality sleep to help our hormones work for us and not against us.

There are also many ways to create happy hormones; the best way starts with a balanced diet – as a starting point, balance your blood sugar levels  and base all snacks and meals on quality proteins, a portion of healthy fats and plenty of leafy greens. Reduce sugar and avoid refined foods, along and other hormonal irritants such as caffeine and alcohol, and you’re on the right track!

The Environment-Impacting Lifestyle That’s On The Rise

Hip & Healthy contributor, Jemma Crow, discusses the rise in the plant-based diet and how this new (and hopefully lasting) trend can positively impact the world we live in.

Chances are you’ve heard of eating clean, recycling and organic vegetables right (it’s 2016 after all) but there’s a new trend bubbling under the radar for the health concious of today. According to a report commissioned by The Vegan Society, the vegan community has increased over 350% over the past decade, making it one of the fastest growing lifestyle movements in Britain. But where has this sharp change in the attitudes of young people come from? Is this something people are doing for ethical reasons, or is it part of our new found love of all things healthy?

So full disclosure here: I’ve been vegetarian for over 20 years. However, my childhood request to stop eating meat wasn’t an ethical one – I simply didn’t like the taste. My parents weren’t keen on the idea at first, but when the mad cow epidemic struck, my mum decided that eating meat wasn’t for her either so I was allowed to make the change.

In recent years, I’ve developed IBS and dairy products such as milk and cheese no longer agree with me like they used to. These days, I eschew them the majority of the time, electing for plant and nut based equivalents instead. While I’ve technically spent the past two decades as a pescatarian, eating fish has started to lose its appeal – possibly due to living with my vegetarian boyfriend and not wanting to cook two separate meals. It’s for these reasons that I’ve been considering making the move to plant-based eating.

To most, the plant-based lifestyle is still seen as fairly restrictive; think about going out for dinner with friends and chances are you’ll imagine a lacklustre menu choice with only one or two options. Thanks to the rise of plant-based health bloggers and specialist restaurants popping up across the country, many young people are taking on this lifestyle and really considering how their choices impact the environment.

Now, it’s not an all or nothing situation. Not everyone commits to plant-based eating full time. Former Glee star Lea Michelle discusses a selective plant-based diet in this month’s Women’s Health magazine, revealing she allows herself a good piece of organic meat during a nice meal out but keeps her house an exclusively meat-free zone. Here’s an example closer to home too. London Fitness Girl Founder Natasha Richardson sticks to a similar regime, following a plant-based lifestyle Monday to Friday and allowing herself organic fish and free range eggs on the weekend. Her rationale? “After living as a strict vegan for 12 months and working 14-hour days, I was left deficient in vitamin D, Iron and B12 and constantly felt tired and lethargic. I’ve realised that it’s essential I live a balanced life and know that there’s some vitamins I simply can’t get naturally on a strict plant-based diet. Being a creative communications consultant, an aquatics coach, a fitness and wellbeing blogger and a VOGA instructor, I demand a lot from my body both physically and mentally. For me a 5:2 plant-based diet has definitely restored my energy levels and I am now ‘officially’ at optimum health thanks to self-medicating through essential fatty acids and the power of plants.”

It’s not just individuals championing the plant-based movement though – you may have noticed that Pret a Manger introduced their Little Veggie Pop-up in London this summer. In a blog on the Pret website, CEO Clive Schlee says “they predicted the Veggie Pret shop would see sales drop by up to 30% [for the month-long venture]” and touted it as an “investment (i.e. a loss maker)”. But guess what? Sales are actually up 70% on the standard store’s takings last year and the pop-up is now sticking around all summer. In fact, it’s proved so popular that people are even sitting on the floor to eat their lunch! Oh, and surprise, surprise – vegan dishes are the big sellers!

Hand in hand with this ethical eating movement is the zero waste trend too – with the most extreme advocates able to fit a year’s worth of waste into a small mason jar. Whilst this isn’t exactly attainable for everyone, small changes to your lifestyle can make a difference. Leading the charge is Kathryn from Going Zero Waste. We asked her about her reasons for this lifestyle change, and she said: “I found zero waste living after health issues forced me to live a more natural lifestyle, and I changed everything from my beauty products to cleaning products and started eating a more plant-based diet. It was on this journey that I discovered the ill effects of plastic on our health and the planet and decided to quit plastic and go zero waste. It’s really about rethinking and putting value back into our belongings and crafting a society with intention – a powerful idea that puts change back into the hands of the consumer. I think it’s a great tool for the younger generation to know that they can have a positive impact on the planet just by changing their purchase decisions.”

So what can you do to help create a healthier planet in the future? Here are some tips to get you started…

  • Always carry your own reusable water bottle with you so that you’re not tempted to buy plastic – Try S’well Bottle (Available on Hip & Healthy here!) for a non-toxic drinking experience
  • Support your local farmer’s market and purchase locally sourced products that you can take home in your own reusable produce bags
  • Use packaging free toiletries such as hard soap and conditioner – Lush do some great items and everything they stock is cruelty free and vegetarian
  • Recycle anything you do end up using – if your council doesn’t recycle then why not start a petition!?

So whether it’s eating a plant-based diet, trying a meat-free week each month or bringing your own KeepCup for your morning coffee to save using the plastic takeaway ones, it’s the small changes that will add up. We all share this world, so it’s important we all do what we can to look after it and I can promise that you’ll feel better for doing your bit.

Pocket Personal Trainer – Why We’re Obsessed With This New Fitness App!

Hip & Healthy contributor, Gemma Bath, documents her experience using the latest fitness app on the block, TruBe!

I think I just experienced fitness Tinder. Swiping left is the average busy working gals’ way to a date in London. So I shouldn’t be surprised that logging into an app is the new and improved way to also find your next trainer.

Visiting TruBe’s website I am impressed ‘Fitness made easy’ is the slogan I am greeted with on the homepage, which is an immediate tick in my books. As a 20 something working full time in the city, fitting in a sweat session daily can often be difficult. The whole idea of this app is trainers come to you whether that is in the comfort of your own home, at the office or in a park. As founder Daria Kantor spruiks “it’s about making personal trainers accessible for everyone”. You pick the time, you pick the style of training and you are in charge. Intrigued I downloaded the app, created my profile, uploaded a photo and started flicking through the tabs. As I started to read trainer profiles it dawned on me. I was quite literally PT shopping, not too dissimilar to online boyfriend shopping. Hang on… was I fit Tindering? The app allows you to see a trainer’s photo, read their bio and basically decide if they’re for you. Instead of swiping left or right, you send out an offer, a request if you will – please train me!

I wanted to fit in a training session by the end of the week, and as it was already Tuesday I dived on in. It was about lunchtime, and I thought you know what, no rest for the wicked how about tonight. The awesome thing about this training option is you get access to trainers from all sorts of backgrounds; ballet, yoga, strength, ah-huh – boxing! I was sold, boxing in Regents Park on a balmy Tuesday night anyone? So I found a trainer, sent out my request and I waited…and waited. I watched and checked the little spinning circle that told me it was ‘contacting the trainer’ for about three hours before I started to notice the online dating similarities creeping back in. Why hadn’t my trainer responded? Did they check out my profile and decide they didn’t want to? Maybe their push notifications aren’t on…why doesn’t my boxing expert want me! Drastic action was needed, I sent out a blanket call…does ANYONE want to train me, tonight at 630pm. I watched as dozens of spinning circles appeared. Finally a bite, two trainers accepted my plea to train. And here, I am embarrassed to say is where the dating comparisons continue. I went on their profiles and blatantly judged. One of the male trainer’s profiles looked rather intimidating. His profile told me he was ex –army and his stern looking photo made me scared he’d frog march me through some pretty vomit inducing drills. I winced and checked the other option, this guy looked more approachable, but his PT skills didn’t include boxing. My heart was set so I ignored both offers, and just like when you read and ignore a message from a potential suitor on Tinder, I felt strangely guilty.

I decided on another option, Friday morning before work, my house. How luxurious a PT in my own home! No lining up for a gym shower or appearing in the office with my sweaty workout clothes slung over my shoulder in a back pack. The night before I started to get nervous for my early morning fitness meet, first date nerves if you will. What if she didn’t like me? What if I didn’t like her? I had of course nothing to worry about, the moment Akua arrived at my front door with her gloves and pads I knew I was in capable hands. The session was fantastic, the right mix of challenging and fun, and I had my very own personal backyard motivator. I don’t think I could ask for anything more convenient in a workout. For the time poor and motivation lacking, TruBe is a true life saver. For stay at home mums, busy office workers and even travellers, this is the perfect way to train. At £50 per one-off session, it might not seem like one for those on a budget. But TruBe does offer a bundle deal of four class for £99 pounds, making it £25 pounds per session ( And you can buddy-up and split that with a friend ).

Nowadays we seem to be app obsessed, using our phones for food delivery, clothes shopping, dating and so it seems, fitness – and for the target audience, this app is a winner. It has been up and running since April last year, and has dozens of amazing trainers with impressive credentials signed on. If you need a trainer fast or a sweat session near you pronto, this is the Tinder equivalent of the dating world. Clever, instantaneous, safe and damn successful.

Scattered with natural light throughout, the hotel is ideal for those who want to relax but remain close to shops and other major attractions in the city. The hotel was the original site of the Amsterdam Music Conservatorium but has been transformed into the ultimate modern luxury by Dutch architect, Daniel Knuttel. The Perfect Post-Summer Cleanse!

Getting ready for summer never really happened this year. Most of June and July seemed to be a wash out. Particularly one wet, windy weekend we went hill walking. After several days of steep ascents and descents, suppers felt distinctly wintery inside cosy pubs… Where were the al fresco suppers of fresh, summer salads watching the evening’s sun bathe the hillsides?

Since there was no external sunshine I decided to give myself some internal sunshine – a juice cleanse seemed to be the perfect answer.

I signed myself up for 3 day Level 3 Plenish Cleanse – ‘designed for maximum results and a serious alkaline balancing act’. The prep days got off to a great start. Amazingly the sun began to shine and the temperatures soared to a rare 26 degrees – so the diet of light salads, no dairy, caffeine or alcohol and lots of water that they recommend felt easy. The juices arrived well packaged with insulation to keep them chilled and a cleanse user manual as well as a signature glass straw. Perfect for consuming future juices and smoothies!

For the next three days I had six different juices a day, (four of them green), all of them 100% organic (certified by The Soil Association), and lots of water in between.

The 4pm ‘Kick’ juice, which contains lemon, chili, lime and coconut nectar, certainly punches above its weight and is a boost at a time of day when energy levels can dip. Going to bed topped up with with cashew based ‘Build’ kept any possible hunger pangs firmly at bay.

I felt fully supported throughout the process and it felt much less hard work than I originally thought it would be. The ‘Boost’ juice was previously a favourite as I had already acquainted myself with that one at Wholefoods – I find it is the perfect antidote to a busy weekend of socializing, helping to ease me into another working week. Packed full of spinach, kale, parsley, romaine lettuce, cucumber, ginger, lime, pear and lemon – it tastes deliciously green and is so nutrient dense you can almost feel your skin glowing with happiness. After the cleanse finished, I really felt my digestive system had been given a new lease of life and was thankful for a much needed rest.

Calgary Avansino’s Top “Feel Good” Tips

New research from Highland Spring shows how important it is for us to feel good, with three times as many people saying they’d rather be happy than have lots of money. An essential for the summer season, feeling good starts with healthy hydration. When you’re 100% hydrated, you’re much more likely to be on top of your game – mentally, physically and emotionally.

Yet 66% of us don’t think we drink enough water on a daily basis. This can lead to dehydration, which can cause a loss of concentration, headaches and muscle fatigue. That’s why Highland Spring has teamed up with wellbeing expert, Calgary Avansino, to launch a new “Feel Good” initiative on the benefits of healthy hydration.

Eat “alive”

What you choose to put on your plate each day matters! And making sure it is as “alive” as possible is the most important thing to remember. By that I mean eating a lot more plants such as broccoli and leafy greens – grown using the sun’s energy on trees, bushes and in the soil. We need to change our perspective about how our plates should look and make sure that we are consistently eating a balanced diet including delicious, nutritious plants!

Move & sweat
Moving and sweating is as good for your mind as it is for your body. Even if you’re new to exercise the benefits are huge! In addition to making us stronger, leaner and more flexible it also relieves stress, helps fight anxiety, makes us sleep better and generally makes us feel more positive. Sounds like something we should slot into our schedules as often as possible, right? Whether you want to work out in the privacy of your living room using an online tutorial, run alone in the park or join friends for a new class, schedule it into your diary like you would any meeting and stick to it! Don’t forget to drink enough water to replenish the water that your body has lost to keep you feeling good and eat something “alive” to refuel after you work out.

Stuff sugar
If you haven’t already, it is time to honestly look at how much sugar you are eating each day (it might surprise you!) and then take steps to eliminate it from your habits little-by-little. It does absolutely nothing for our bodies other than send us on a sugar rollercoaster of highs and lows. Aside from clearing out our cupboards of all the obvious foods (crisps, sugary soft drinks, cakes, biscuits, sweets), it is important to read the labels and check what is in everything we’re eating… you’ll be shocked by all the places sugar is hiding. Sauces, marinades, breads, juices, store-bought smoothies (even “green” ones), “healthy” snack bars, fruit yoghurts, granola… Keep an eye out. A good equation to remember is 4 grams of sugar equals 1 teaspoon. With this in mind, when you’re reading the package, if it says it contains 16 grams of sugar, you’ll know this equals 4 teaspoons, which is much easier to visualise. Imagining the teaspoons, you are consuming will quickly make you want to cut down on how much you’re eating.

Take 10
Life is unbelievably hectic for all of us – so hectic in fact that sometimes we forget to breathe! Obviously not the kind we do automatically and subconsciously, but I mean the really deep, relaxing breathing that completely slows us down, focuses us and tunes us into our bodies and minds. Focusing on this type of breathing – even for 5 minutes a day – is a form of meditation. Please don’t be scared of the word meditation and start imagining yourself as a monk, sitting for hours at a time and pontificating on nothing – this couldn’t be further from what you’ll be doing. It just means taking some time out of your “normal” life and focusing inward and quieting the mind. I find the easiest way to do that is by focusing consciously on your breath. Give it a try consistently and I guarantee it will change you for the better.

Hydration Sensation
We often forget just how important it is to be well watered, especially during the warm summer months. Dehydration is serious business! Every cell, tissue and organ in our body requires water in order to work well. There is a lot of varying advice given about how much we should be drinking and there isn’t one rule for everyone. Basically most people need to drink more than they do. I simply try to keep a water bottle with me at my desk, in my car or when I’m out and about then I never have an excuse not to be replenishing my water levels. It’s important to consistently hydrate yourself and not just drink water when you feel thirsty – that’s when your body is screaming for water. One of the best indicators for hydration levels is your urine; the darker in colour it is, the more you need to start drinking! Ideally you want it to be colourless or light yellow. When it comes to what you’re drinking, you can jazz water up with sliced cucumber, ginger, celery and squeezed lemon or lime. It’s also important to remember you’ll need to drink more when you’re exercising.

Commit to Trying
Eating well, staying healthily hydrated and exercising regularly shouldn’t be stressful, challenging or feel like a chore. It is all about being kind to yourself, loving yourself and replacing bad habits with good ones. To start off, all I want you to do is commit to yourself that you will try – even if you don’t make any practical changes for a few weeks. Make yourself a priority, embrace a positive mindset and this will allow you to overcome obstacles which were seemingly impossible, making you feel great. It’s never too late to start, nor is any situation too far gone.

Intended primarily for nighttime use, the masque works by blocking damage and strengthening the skin, but can be used in the morning prior to extreme exposure to help resist pollution.

7 Ways To Up Your Running Game

H&H founder, Sadie Reid, shares her 7 tips to up your running game!

Squeezing in a run can be hard at the best of times; work, kids, social life and much needed down-time can all get in the way, but when you do get that break to lace up your kicks and head outdoors then why not make the time count even more by trying out one (or a few) of the following ways to get more out of your run…

Get Technical – but not how you think

Measure miles not calories! Getting technical is a great way to boost your run game as it will spur you on and hold you accountable (there is no hiding from those digital distances), but it is so important not to use it as a way to measure burning calories as this can lead to a really unhealthy exercise philosophy.

Download a Podcast

For longer runs I find that a podcast is a great way to distract yourself and you soon find that an hour passes incredibly quickly. Favourites include business podcasts from Tim Ferris, Lewis Howes and Sophia Amuroso (GirlBoss Radio), Desert Island Discs is always fascinating, She Said podcast by Elle Magazine is like listening to articles being formed and written, with a variety of well-known Editors and Writers discussing their thoughts and opinions live.

Turn Treadmill Running Up a Knotch

You know what they say – running on the treadmill is easier than on the road due to the force of the conveyer belt that propels you forward. Want to get more out of your run on a treadmill put it at an incline of 1.5 for the duration.

Be Prepared

We have all read that laying out our running kit the night before a morning run means that you are ten times more likely to actually go on that run. But, we suggest going one step further, make sure you have your post-run food in the house or put water in a jug in the fridge so that there is beautifully cool water and a delicious, nutritious snack as soon as you get back – this too will act as motivation to get you going on that run in the first place as well as fueling you around your route dreaming of the delicious things that await you when you return.

Fuel Up

Which takes me onto my next point about fuel. You have got to be putting the right fuel in your body to get your best running game. Pre-marathon I always find that a peanut butter and jam sandwich goes a long way. Carbs are your best friends when it comes to running but don’t be fooled – they still have to be nutritious so that white bread is going to do nothing but spike your sugar levels. Instead opt for spelt or wholegrain bread, organic if possible so it is entirely natural. The night before a long run have brown rice pasta with protein like tuna or Bolognese. Porridge is also an excellent pre-run meal – add some nut butter to it for the protein and drink plenty of water the days leading up to your run so that your body is comfortably hydrated.

Hydrate Naturally

Don’t be fooled into thinking that sugary, artificial drinks are actually going to help your performance in the long run. In the short term, they may give you short energy bursts but over a long period of time you’ll feel those come downs even harder. Drink water! It’s brilliant, if you didn’t know already! You can add a little fruit juice and pinch of salt to it for a boost of natural sugars and electrolytes if you feel you need it but, water alone should be enough to keep you body happy and hydrated to give you your best PB yet!

Heads up on Headphones

There is nothing worse than a fiddling with your smart phone on a run. Invest in some proper sports headphones that have a remote control on the cord and are made specifically for sport, as you also don’t want your sweat interfering with them either. Our favourite brand is Happy Plugs, which we have just recently started selling on the site. The sports specific headphones are the best for listening to your favourite motivational tune, hassle free!

Leah Kim – Fitspiration

Lover of all things yoga, we were so excited to chat with the inspiring and awesome, Leah Kim. We admire her huge career leap from studying economics at university to becoming a yoga teacher; she has travelled around the world to teach and enthuse others with her incredible passion. She is now Nike’s Global Yoga Ambassador and A NIKE MASTER TRAINER! We caught up with her to discuss all things yoga, health and Nike…

Let’s talk yoga… how and when did it come into your life?
I started taking yoga classes and doing yoga videos at home in my teens. For several years it was just something I dabbled in and out of as part of an overall fitness regimen. I thought it was okay, but it was no more interesting to me than being on an elliptical machine. Then when I was about 22 years old I met my now-mentor. She and her class changed everything for me and how I experienced yoga.

Your Nike’s Global Yoga Ambassador (amazing!)… what does that role involve?
Thanks! It’s the best job I could ever have asked for. I get to do a variety of things with Nike. I teach live classes at Niketowns, go on global tour to teach live events to thousands of people, appear in the Nike Training Club App, design yoga workouts for the App, shoot advertising campaigns, consult with design teams on products, help launch products such as the Studio Wrap… to name a few.

You’re also a Nike Training Club (NTC) Master Trainer… could you tell us more about that?
These roles are intertwined. My work within the NTC Master Trainer network revolves around yoga and being a voice of NTC Yoga, and creating a perspective on yoga that fits in with what NTC stands for.

What benefits do you feel yoga can bring to the body on a physical level?
First and foremost yoga will teach you to breathe more effectively, which benefits pretty much every physiological function and activity in your body. It also balances any high impact training you might do. It helps reduce muscular tension, pain, and helps improve mobility.

… and on a mental level?
This is my favorite part of what yoga does for you. It makes you feel better, less stressed, and more connected to yourself. One of the most wondrous things I experienced when I started practicing yoga every day was how much kinder and more patient I became in general. I was so curious at how a form of “exercise” could have that effect. Of course, yoga is so much more than simply exercise.

What is your favourite yoga pose for relieving tension and stress in the shoulder and neck area (those of us that work slumped at our desks all day)?
I hear you! I don’t think there is anyone on the planet that doesn’t have some degree of neck and shoulder tension. I love doing a Standing Forward Fold with interlaced hands. Stand with feet at least hip width apart, knees soft (or even bent if your hamstrings or lower back are tight), interlace fingers behind your back, draw your shoulder blades in towards each other and keep the shoulders away from the ears, fold the torso over the legs and let the head be heavy. Reach the arms up and forward towards the floor in front of you, still keeping the shoulders away from the ears. Breathe big.

How would you define your style of yoga; which practice do you lean towards?
I definitely lean towards a flow or Vinyasa style of yoga, that’s not too slow but not too fast. I love a combination of fluid, heat-building movement as well as deep stretches.

What was it like getting back into yoga after having your little one?
It was extremely hard and heart-breaking, to be honest. I had to have an emergency cesarian and I didn’t heal brilliantly or quickly. The first time I stepped onto my mat at about 7 weeks postpartum, I fell to the floor trying to do a Plank, my entire body screamed in Down Dog, and even a simple supine spinal twist caused searing pain. After a few minutes, I curled into a fetal position and cried on my mat. I was too traumatized and afraid to try again for another several weeks and even then, I tiptoed back into my practice. I basically just unrolled my mat and did easy movements on it for about 20 minutes and didn’t ask more of myself. It’s been a very slow work in progress and poses are nowhere near as easy as they felt before, but I have pretty much everything back. And I have so much more respect and gratitude for my body and the human body in general. I realised I had taken so much for granted. Because I never had a six pack or obvious muscles anywhere, really, I just never thought I was really that strong. It was only when I couldn’t do things I had been able to do before that I realized that I had been super strong and should have given myself more credit!

How do you juggle looking after your son, alongside your amazing career and fitting in lots of exercise?
This is also extremely hard. I travel a fair amount for my work, sometimes taking the little one with me if it’s a longer stint away, sometimes leaving him at home. He got really sick on our last trip out in Portland and we had to take him to Urgent Care. Luckily it wasn’t anything serious, but he was not well for the entire week, and because I was so busy, I had to leave him with a babysitter that he did not know, in a place he did not know, for 12 hours a day. I spoke to my clients to see where I might be able to stay home with him, and thankfully they were really understanding, and I did my best to shuttle back and forth between mommy and work duties. It was so frustrating and stressful because when I was with my son, I felt like I was letting my clients down. And when I was at work, I felt like I was failing as a mother. But each morning I took a moment and asked myself what the best, most right thing was. I was fully transparent with my clients, I asked for help and flexibility, and then I tried to be as fully present as possible in the moment, wherever that was. I recognized that it was all a challenging compromise, and tried not to beat myself up about it. The exercise piece luckily is not as challenging for me, since my work revolves around movement, exercise is basically built-in to my job. When I’m home with my son, I get my workouts in while he’s sleeping or in school.

What does your typical day look like?
My days are so varied as it depends if I’m in the middle of a big project or mostly doing mommy responsibilities. If I’m at home in NYC, I get up with the little one in the morning, take him to school, take a yoga or barre or spin class, and get my work meetings or calls in before picking him up around lunchtime. Then during his nap time I try to read, study, or take care of admin. Afternoons are usually spent running around at a park, and then I might have a client or teach a class in the evening. I try to cook dinner most nights, otherwise I order sushi.

When you’ve had a hectic day at work, how do you wind down and chill?
It might seem kind of odd but my idea of winding down has nothing to do with yoga, meditation, or exercise, since that’s what my work revolves. Instead, chill time for me is basically being a couch potato. I love watching funny but smart comedies, like 30 Rock. Or having a glass of wine and catching up with my husband. Or reading a magazine like Vogue or Cereal.
