Content & Creative Designer at H&H, Issy, (who also happens to be a PT) is here to share her top 10 supermarket essentials that she puts into her basket every week without fail! Being an advocate for strength training there are lots of healthy high protein sources included, with ideas for how to cook them for delicious, nutritious meals. From the sweet treats Issy reaches for, to the tea she self proclaims she’s obsessed with, here are the 10 supermarket purchases a PT buys on repeat.

Waitrose Cajun Spiced Prawn & Sweet Potato Fishcakes

These are my go-to for a quick, easy dinner that involves minimal washing up. With over 11 grams of protein per fishcake and an ingredients list I approve of, I always have a pack in the fridge so I can pop them in the oven on the evenings I finish teaching late, boil some peas and voila…a healthy, tasty dinner in 20 mins with minimal effort required!

Red Lentil Pasta

If you’re a pasta addict, this is a great healthier alternative (not that normal pasta is necessarily unhealthy!) The only ingredient this pasta includes is red lentil flour, meaning it’s packed with protein. It works so well with a tomato-based sauce and has become one of my weekly dinner favourites!

Salmon Fillets

Monday night in my household means one thing, salmon for dinner. Since I was about 10 years old this has been a thing and I don’t intend to stop anytime soon! Full of omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins, I tend to oven roast mine with a bit of soy, honey and garlic, then plate up with brown rice and tenderstem broccoli to kick off the week right!

Protein Bagel Thins

I’ve brought the Warburton’s protein bagel thins on repeat since they launched a few years ago. I’ve tried most brands bagel thin variation and I stand by Warburton’s being the best by a mile, and the fact that they also contain 8.5 grams of protein and 4 grams of fibre is an added bonus! Perfect with PBJ or topped with eggs, these are a winner!

Turkey Breast Mince

Since giving up beef, Turkey mince has become a weekly staple. Whether that’s in the form of a chilli, a bolognese or if I’m feeling fancy I’ll whip up some tacos. Turkey is one of the leanest forms of protein, I tend to opt for the breast mince which contains around 30 grams of protein per serving and plus it is only 2% fat!

Dark Chocolate Rice Cakes

Come the evening my sweet tooth kicks in, so I make sure I’ve got lots of healthy(ish) treats in to satisfy my cravings. Dark chocolate rice cakes are so yummy and are relatively low in calories, dairy-free, gluten-free, and contain no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.

Oatly Barista Milk

Oatly doesn’t need much of an intro, but the barista formula is where it’s at if you’re into coffee…Nothing foams up like this milk does! The creamy blend is the most similar in texture to normal milk, not watery at all. It also works great for tea, making the perfect cuppa!

Frozen Blueberries

Daily I make a protein smoothie post-workout for my breakfast. It’s super simple and tastes amazing with only a few ingredients needed, one being frozen blueberries. They have to be frozen as they create a thick texture, plus they’re cheaper, lock in the nutrients and keep for longer…so many wins!
Smoothie Recipe: 1 scoop of Free Soul Vegan Vanilla Protein, scoop of Dose & Co. Collagen, handful of spinach, handful of frozen blueberries, 4 cubes of ice, 200ml coconut water

Sabra Houmous

Houmous is the ideal afternoon snack and Sabra’s will literally change your life…not to be dramatic or anything! It’s the creamiest houmous in all the land and knocks spots off any others in the supermarket. Dipped with cucumber and carrot sticks, this pot can get easily demolished in a matter of minutes.

Yorkshire Tea Malty Biscuit Brew

This item is by no means a health tip in any way but it wouldn’t be accurate if I didn’t include the Yorkshire biscuit tea in my supermarket essentials. This brew is mindblowing, literally tastes like you’ve dipped a biscuit into your tea and there isn’t any added sugar, I don’t quite know how they’ve done it!

Clarence Court Burford Brown Eggs-

Burford Browns are the most elite eggs in the biz. Once you’ve tried them you’ll never be able to back…the rich orange yolk is a game changer! They’re rather expensive as far as eggs go but trust me they’re worth it. Lunch usually involves eggs in some way, I like to switch it up between poached eggs and avo, baked eggs shakshuka or scrambled egg with pesto, there are tons of variations I experiment with!

Deliciously Ella Cacao & Almond Oat Bars-

These are an on-the-go snack that has saved me many times! I always keep one of these stashed in my bag for when hunger strikes and they always do the trick. Deliciously Ella is such a trustworthy brand for yummy snacks, the ingredients are always natural and plant-based plus these are a great source of fibre too.
